We had a fabulous day out on Saturday. We drove to Tula, in the state of Hidalgo, famous for its Toltec ruins which include large statues called “Gigantes”. We took the B roads from Atlacomulco via Santiago to Jilotepec. From there we took the Mexico City to Queretaro motorway a short way to the new toll road to Tula. It’s lovely and is part of the new “northern arch” around Mexico City (that actually joins the motorway to Morelia on the other side of our lake.) When we got to Tula we went to the town centre first and had breakfast in the market at a “fonda” (little informal restaurant.) From there we had a quick walk around the town centre to the main square and mural. (It’s in a bit of a mess!) We had a walk around the main church, which dates from the 16th century. We then went to the ruins, which are two kilometers from the town centre. They are rather impressive, are they not?

los gigantes de tula are located at Tula the capital of the Toltec Empire founded around 750 AD as civilisation was crumbling. On the Temple of The Morning Star are four basalt warrior atlantes more than 5m /16ft tall. They once served as pillars to support the roof of the temple that stood atop of the pyramid and have butterfly breastplates, feathered headdresses and sun-shaped shields on their backs.

4.6 meters toltec deities scultures. They were used as columns for a wood ceiling. They are a remake since the original ones didn't make it trought time. It was a matter of patience to avoid the people in the picture.
