Mayakovskaya Metro station, Moscow, Russia

Mayakovskaya Metro station, Moscow, Russia
Made by Cat Girl 007
The Moscow metro is a marvel of urban design. Every day, as many as 9 million people use the metro system -- that's more than in New York and London combined. As well as being one of the most efficient and cheapest underground transit systems in the world, the Moscow Metro is also undoubtedly one of the most beautiful. The brainchild of the tsars but finally put into action by Stalin, whose idea to make the city’s metro stations “palaces for the people” has translated into some truly spectacular, subterranean architectural gems. It’s possible to spend an entire day or more travelling the metro and exploring the vast array of ornate stations; each constructed and decorated in its own unique way. There are 182 Moscow stations. This shot is in the Mayakovskaya, considered by many to be the jewel in the Moscow Metro crown. It was the grand-prize winner at the 1939 World's Fair in New York for its art deco central hall that features gracefull columns faced with stainless steel and pink rhodonite. This is also one of the deepest stations which allowed it to serve as an air-raid shelter during WWII. On the anniversary of the October Revolution, on 7 November 1941 Stalin personally addressed a mass assembly of party leaders and ordinary Muscovites in the central hall of the station.

Red Star of Communism

Moscow. May, 2006. 'Red Star of Communism' On Black. Julia's grandfather died not long ago. He was a proud veteran of the Great Patriotic War against the fascists, a soviet believer until the end. I remember a conversation they had around the kitchen table in 2001. Julia told him that they were thinking of taking the red stars down from the Kremlin's towers. Take them down? her grandfather asked. Why would they take them down when they'll soon be putting them up all over the world? Julia paused, smiled and gave him a hug.

A little fun with a Zenit E recently found in an attic. Being a kid of the Cold War who could resist Midnight at Checkpoint Charlie, James Bond, Smiley's People, Eastern Europe, the Stasi and KGB. Oh and for those who don't know the Zenit E was made in the old USSR (Soviet Russia) in the late 1960's. It still works too. Sorry didn't have an old passport had to use a modern one for the nit pickers out there :oD Советский камеры, сделанные в СССР = Soviet camera made in the USSR

State Historical Museum - museum charting the development of Russian civilization from Kievan Rus to the present day, housed in a magnificent dark redbrick building covered in ornate turrets and pinnacles, which was built in the 1870s and officially opened by Tsar Alexander III. You can see the famous St Basil Cathedral on the right - far. source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_Historical_Museum

Trying to sort out my photographic workflow (are there *ooh get him with his workflow* tags you can use to undercut that last statement slightly? ah - thankyou!) I came across this, taken on an afternoon when the hotel was still standing, the light was marvellous and many things were ok with the world (not that they aren't now, of course). The little Fuji was just about up to the task so - other than the square crop - I've done nothing to it...

St. Basil's Cathedral

St. Basil's Cathedral

There's not much I can say about St. Basil's Cathedral except it's a great example of beautiful kitsch and, with that the Russian souvenir tradespeople have fun with it. I even saw a scaled version of the cathedral which doubled as a vodka bottle and an alarm clock. Now that's just classy. In any case a photo trip to Russia wouldn't be complete with a photo of it, and rightfully so, it's a highlight.

On the far left is St. Basil's Cathedral. This was taken somewhere on the Rossiya Hotel, perhaps a rooftop observation point? I haven't identified the rest of the buildings in the picture - feel free to chime in. Taken by my grandfather David C. Cook on a visit to Moscow for a meeting of the International Electrotechnical Commission. Development stamp is June, 1969, so perhaps this is May.

Гум (Pronounce Goom) is a huge and nice department store facing the Kremlin on the red Square. Now you can every worldwide famous fashion (and expensive brand). I accentuated contrasts and modified the lights on this picture to attenuate the contrasts. That gives an HDR kind of effect. As you may already know, I love my wide angle. Hope you do too ;-)

I was taking some quite serious photos for Martin and Ian, his business partner, when he grabbed my Russian hat and stood looking like it was a Soviet era state funeral. I couldn't resist Photoshopping the poster of Lenin onto the bare wall behind ;-) (Strobists: on camera flash with single SB800 reflected off ceiling at LHS)

The Moscow Conservatory. We attended a free concert of five student compositions by young composers, performed by the Moscow Youth Symphony Orchestra. It was an interesting and enjoyable evening, but we didn't manage to resolve the matter of whether classical music is a period or a genre.... April, 2006.

I like drinking coffee in 5 stars cafe in Kamergersky by-street. I close my eyes and hear voices in all languages of the world, heel's knocks, laugh, then I open the eyes and see roofs of the houses and evening sky. And I feel like I live in 100 worlds in one time, and all of them are in my imagination.

This evening in Moscow was really special. We didn´t know what to expect when we looked from a map, that in this spot there must be an interesting park. And it sure was. 74 paviljongs built in thee soviet era - one for each soviet state. Soviet exaggeration in its purest form.

To conduct black market operations in the USSR one had to dress the part with new jeans and bags full of goods. Within minutes Rubles flowed and clothing and forbidden items from the west were traded. The USSR had one of the best free market economies the world had ever seen.

No cameras were allowed inside so this is a bit of a distant shot! It was a very long, cold wait to get a glimpse of Lenin's Body in the Mausoleum. For a 2009 version without snow please take a look at on kerrieinsydney's photostream!
