Xujiahui gridlock - Since arrived in Shanghai few days ago, the different sides of busy city life is all starting to come back to me. Having lived very close to Shanghai's Xujiahui intersection for the first few years of my life, I know how insanely busy this place is. This place is packed with vehicles and people from early morning to late night, seven days a week. I think the traffic is still pretty bad despite that the intersection has been widened few times in the last 20 years or so. If you have to go through here by car or buss during peak hours (such as 5pm, when this photo was taken), make sure you bring something to read/do as you may not be going anywhere for a long while.

A whole block of good lane houses (seemingly from the 1940's) between Huashan Lu and Tianping Lu was designated for demolition in November 2008. Announced reason - during the construction of subway line #9 houses will become unsafe to live in. I don't believe it. Mark my words, we'll see another shopping 'plaza' grow in their place. The sad thing, this sounds like one of the projects they'll hurry to finish before the EVENT 2010.

Metro City is a giant electronics market/mall that has pretty much any electronic device you can imagine. If it plugs into a wall, uses batteries, or runs off solar power, you can probably find it here. There are also a lot of other electronics stores in the area as well as the Grand Gateway Shopping Mall (right) and the Orient Shopping Centre Ltd. (left). This is a vertorama (my first) created by stacking two horizontal photos.

The city is quite proud that the Expo will be in Shanghai and the entire city is covered with Haibos, signs, and other reminders that the Expo is coming. Chaotic Shanghai traffic - Just like many other mega-cities, the traffic in Shanghai is seemingly governed by the law of the jungle. Taxi drivers especially are really masters of finding any available space to squeeze through between the lanes. Hence, a traffic light-trail shot reveal quite chaotic, semi-prallell pattern.

This is the former location of a brick factory. All that remains of the factory is this chimney which was preserved to indicate the original location of the factory and act as a reminder that this area used to be very industrial. Vertorama from three shots.

After going electronics shopping we were wandering around trying to find a tiny museum on Chinese propaganda and discovered this beautiful park. I couldn't help but stop and take some shots. According to Wikipedia, the park was built in 2002.

Metro City after dark - Metro City (美罗城) is a shopping mall in Xujiahui with a distinct globe outer structure that lights up after dark. This structure, along with the electronics section of this shopping centre are very well known in Shanghai.
