Taxi Scam!!!

Taxi Scam!!!
Made by L. Michael Roberts
Taxi Scam: Well folks… the “professional tourist” got scammed on arrival in Beijing!!!! My excuse is that I was tired and not paying attention after 21 hours of traveling from Toronto. On Monday afternoon, as I left the Beijing Capital Airport arrivals area after clearing customs, a man approached me and asked me in English if I needed a taxi… I said yes. He asked me to come with him and then we walked out the main doors and past rows of waiting taxis… I was a little suspicious and asked him if it was a metered taxi… he insisted it was. He walked me over to the parking garage, took out his mobile [cell phone] and said he would call “one of his taxis”. He showed me an official looking laminated card and said he was “an agent” for the taxis… the card said the rate to downtown hotels was Y400 [today from Hotel to the airport I paid Y140 in total]. When the “taxi” pulled up, driven by another guy who seemed to speak little English, there was no sign on the top and no logo or anything else to show it was a Taxi. I hesitated and the guy opened the glove compartment and showed me the meter saying meter taxi... meter taxi so I got in. The “agent” guy rode in the front passenger seat and did most of the talking, while the other guy drove and said very little. Once we got to Tiananmen Square which is a few blocks from the hotel… the “agent” asked me for the money so I handed over Y400 which was all of the Chinese cash I had on me at the time. Then he insisted he needed another Y100 to cover “road taxes” meaning the toll he had paid on the airport expressway [I think it is Y10 or Y20] and for his “expenses”. By this time, my suspicions, which had been in a coma, finally came alive and I began thinking how I might salvage something out of this situation. I took out my camera and started doing the tourist thing snapping pictures… and when we got to the hotel, I snapped the one above which shows the “taxi” with the guy who was driving reaching to open the trunk to get out my bag. The “agent” insisted he needed the extra Y100 and I tried to explain that was all of the Chinese cash I had on me at the time and that I would change money in the hotel. Mr. “agent” took my bag out of the trunk of the “taxi” and refused to relinquish it until we went into the hotel. The hotel did not offer any foreign exchange so I simply gave the “agent” $20 US$ - the smallest bill I had - just to get out of the situation.. and into bed to sleep off the jet lag. Stranger No. 19/100 - Song Yu

Stranger No. 19/100 - Song Yu

This picture is #19 in my 100 strangers project. Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at www.100strangers.com/. Underneath the giant soft box that is the smog covering Beijing, I met Song Yu. I had arrived earlier that morning on an overnight flight from Sydney, and what better way to keep busy than to go out looking for strangers. The Moon Festival was in full swing, so I thought tourist attractions might be closed but figured Xidan--the local shopping centre--would be open. Fortunately, I had guessed right and there were plenty of folks out and about. I spent 90 minutes hitting the pavement in search of someone interesting and had just decided to call it day when I spotted Song Yu. With my non-existent Chinese (pi jou?), I wasn't quite sure how the whole encounter would take place, but I approached him nonetheless. When I asked if I could take his photo, he happily agreed and struck the following pose for me. Then I asked him for his name and pulled out my phone to make sure I was writing it down correctly. Since he seemed to understand English, I went on to explain the project to him in more detail. He smiled politely and nodded so I thanked him and went on my way. I also made a breakthrough technique-wise. I finally figured out how to focus on someone's eyes when they are wearing glasses--find someone wearing frames without lenses! This seemed to be quite a popular trend in China.

The Looming Food Crisis in China: Gardens of Beijing

The Looming Food Crisis in China: Gardens of Beijing
Made by D J Clark
Two students look at a computer in the street. Clark returns to Beijing to look at one potential solution to the looming Asian food crisis being trialled in many cities throughout Asia, the urban garden. Using disused land, roof tops and even subterranean urban spaces scientists are trying to create ways of tackling urban food insecurity in the cities themselves rather than always looking to the countryside. Professor Cai Jianming from the Chinese academy of sciences is a world leader in developing new technologies to allow this to happen and he has been working with the Beijing municipality to develop his ideas. 06/07/2011, Beijing, China.

A clash between the old and new in central Beijing: hutong buildings hidden away behind hoardings on the new and improved Xidan Bei DaJie, Xicheng, Beijing. Survivors like these buildings that stand in the way of developers' wrecking balls are known as nails in China, because they stick up above ground otherwise levelled for new construction.

There was a matching banner on the other side of the atrium, but there seemed to be a problem with the fastenings and they took it down.

Don't know what they are thinking. Veggies cheese ---- 蔬菜骑士? Cheese can be called as 芝士, 奶酪, 干酪, 乳酪, 起司 in chinese, but “骑士“...... Turkey ham ---- 火鸡汉姆... 0_0, 土耳其火腿 is more believable I think!
