The White House (Witte Huis) is something of an architectural landmark in Europe. It is the continent's first skyscraper, built in 1898 for a pair of Rotterdam businessmen eager to show off their wealth. They commissioned, a grand office building in the American spirit. This is the result: An 11-story, 147-foot structure in the French chateau style. It rests on nine-hundred pilings driven into the ground, and at the time of its completion was the tallest building in Europe. It was also one of the few buildings in central Rotterdam to survive the German bombing campaigns of World War Two. Unlike American skyscrapers which rely on a steel frame to support its stonework, this building's load it borne by two thick interior walls perpendicular to four other lighter walls. However, steel is still used to hold the facade in place and to brace the floors Het Witte Huis was de eerste wolkenkrabber van Europa. De hoogbouw geschiedenis van Rotterdam begint in 1898, het jaar dat het Witte Huis aan de Oude Haven gereed kwam. Decennia lang bleef dit monument met zijn 45 meter hoogte, de top in Europa. Het kantoorgebouw werd in 1897 ontwikkeld door twee Rotterdamse broers. Gerrit en Herman van der Schuijt waren respectievelijk 34 en 31 jaar oud bij de oplevering van het gebouw. Gerrit van de Schuijt ondernam in 1894 een reis naar New York waar hij werd geinspireerd door verzamelkantoorgebouwen en wolkenkrabbers. De architect met wie hij in Rotterdam zijn idee realiseerde was Willem Molenbroek. Het ontwerp van Het Witte Huis is in Art nouveau stijl op Amerikaansche leest maar het werd een gemetselde toren gebouwd in tegenstelling tot de staal constructies die in Amerika werden gebruikt. De elf verdiepingen die dit gebouw telt kunnen per lift worden bereikt en op het dak is er een dakterras waar vroeger iedereen voor een kwartje het centrum van Rotterdam kon bewonderen. Tegenwoordig wordt het uitzichtplatform alleen nog tijdens evenenementen open gesteld.

The building is 43 m (140 ft) tall, with 10 floors, and was the tallest in Europe at the time it was built. The architect W Molenbroek designed the 10-storey building, at the time an unprecedented height in Europe. The site at Wijnhaven 3 is just 1 m above sea-level and skeptics claimed that the soft soil of Rotterdam would be unable to adequately support the building, so before construction could properly begin, 1000 piles were driven into the ground to support the building's weight. The building is constructed from iron and steel and cement, and includes two thick interior walls which increase the building's strength. Unlike many other contemporary buildings of the time, wood was not a significant construction material due to the fear of fire. The building cost 127,900 Dutch guilder. The art nouveau building you see here is the Witte Huis (White House).
