Yesterday was a sad day for Chicago architecture--Adler and Sullivan's Dexter building burned down. I didn't think these photos of the building were that great, so I never posted them. I always meant to go back and take better ones. I guess it's too late. Other Flickr members have many photos of the damage: I guess it also means I'll never get that secretarial degree I wanted.

Completed in 1887, gutted by fire on 10/23/06, demolished beginning on 10/24/2006. Designed by the team of Lous Sullivan and Dankmar Adler, this building was significant in the evolution of building engineering from the late 19th century. The building was also home to the famous George Diamond Steakhouse, which closed in 2001. The building was vacant at the time of the fire.
