When Mount St. Helens erupted in in May of 1980 it threw around 0.7 cubic miles of debris. Fifty-seven people were killed; 250 homes, 47 bridges, 15 miles (24 km) of railways and 185 miles (300 km) of highway were destroyed. When I was there in July 2006 it was just a little gassy. Whew... What's wrong with this picture?! It's July 19th and there are no cars in the parking lot. The access road is still closed to the public because of snow and rock falls. This is a normally busy spot in the summer.
