Idaho Birding Trail

Idaho Birding Trail

I've known about the Idaho Birding Trail since it was announced by the Governor a few years ago. I have the guide book and through it have been introduced to some beautiful and wonderful places fairly close to home. I've linked to the website from Flickr and other places. But until a few short weeks ago I had not noticed this sign at Wilson Ponds.

Of the 40 species of cormorants in the world, the double-crested is the only one that breeds in Idaho. I see them often in the summer months at Wilson Pond, and I've seen many along the Snake River as well.

The Trophy Pond is stocked for catch and release fishing. Wilson Ponds is just south of Nampa, Idaho, and is managed by Idaho Fish and Game. Many come here to fish, but there are always a number of people simply walking the trails, watching birds, and looking for something interesting to photograph.

I've seen fewer cormorants this year than last. There were a few out on this day in June so I snapped a photo or two just to prove this wasn't wishful thinking. This big cottonwood is on the banks of the Trophy Pond, one of the Wilson Ponds near Nampa, Idaho.

It's difficult to tell, but the bushes in the distant right are on an island in Beach's Pond, one of the Wilson Ponds near Nampa, Idaho. Geese, coots, gulls, and other birds use this island year round; people aren't allowed to traipse around out there.

Late October at the Wilson Ponds near Nampa, Idaho. This is the North Pond, and the last bits of fall are still clinging to the trees. The autumn colors were especially brilliant this year. I really like the way the reflection shows through the reeds.

Reflections in the North Pond, one of the Wilson Ponds near Nampa, Idaho. This is one of my favorite places to be, especially at sunrise. Sometimes this place is shared with others fishing or bird watching, and some days I get it all to myself.

I don't get many good wildlife photos; my camera works really well for landscapes, but I rarely get close enough to anything wild to get a good picture. So when this guy stayed still long enough for me to snap a photo, I took the opportunity.

Have I mentioned recently how much I love walking along Trophy Pond at Wilson Ponds? This is the only spot I have ever been the beaver who lives here. Sightings are rare. But beaver or no, this is still a beautiful place.
