Oak Grove schoolhouse in Sylvania. Located in Wildwood Metropark the schoolhouse was built in the late 1800s. The bricks were made from the clay found in 10 Mile Creek about 1/4 mile away from its original site (the school was moved by the Metroparks and restored). Unfortunately it's not open this time of year, so, no pics from inside on this day; new years day was also a little overcast so the light is very wintery - no nice sunset or anything...

Tuxedo beetle

I see these, sometimes in great numbers, in the fall, and I wonder what they are. Ah ha, a helpful user on bugguide.net/node/view/148624 has pointed out that it greatly resembles a type of oil beetle. The crooked antennae are unique to the male of the species, which I found surprising because this guy's large abdomen seemed almost gravid in its weight.

Ok, I think I've just gone on the official APB for the PP and HDR police. Just playing around with HDRs to see what I can do and how over-the-top I can go without ruining things. 3 bracketed exposures and several layers of blending and smoothing along with some dodge and burn. Go ahead, you can tell me how silly it looks. This was in the east parking lot at Wildwood Metropark in Sylvania.

Wildwood is the former estate of Robert Stranahan, co-founder of the Champion Spark Plug Company. There is a story about this part of the river that says Mrs. Stranaham wanted to be able to hear the sounds of water from her patio, but the river was too far away. She brought in workers to alter the flow of the river so that it would pass below her patio in the manor house.

I took the dog and camera to Wildwood Metropark in Toledo to work on my (non-existent) DOF technique. Not all of these shots are DOF shots, but they're the ones I found most interesting from that outing. There's a great tree at the park that my Dad introduced me to that's all kinds of interesting as the subject of a picture.

Day #12 of 365 photo-a-day project. Today's challenge was to get a picture in focus seconds before daylight disappeared–and without the help of a remote shutter release (left it 500 miles away on my desk). Aperture 5.0, shutter speed 5 sec, ISO 200. Water flowing around fingers appears to be Luke Skywalker's light sabers.

C'mon, you just knew I wouldn't be able to pass up a title like that, didn't you? I took the dog and camera to Wildwood Metropark in Toledo to work on my (non-existent) DOF technique. Not all of these shots are DOF shots, but they're the ones I found most interesting from that outing.

A super-fierce Hognose Snake

Man, I got totally taken in by this snake's hissing and lunging at me. Not to mention the hood. As it turns out, the Eastern hognose is mostly harmless. I was so intimidated I didn't even get to see him play dead. Found just off the trail at Wildwood Metropark in Toledo, Ohio.

Day #13 of 365 photo-a-day project. 2nd photo of the day. I seem to have reflections and ghosts on my mind lately. I'm thinking of adding a ghostly young woman in a diaphanous dress pouring tea. Though it was taken through a window, it looks like a film double exposure.

Window on Wildlife, Wildwood Metropark, Toledo, Ohio. For folks who do not live in a cold climate, the odd disk and hose is a heater. It keeps the water hole from freezing so the wild life may drink.

Here's the full view of the intimidating Eastern hognose snake. He's got a nice hood there, and he was hissing too. Found just off the trail at Wildwood Metropark in Toledo, Ohio.

This guy was not at all afraid of people. He approached me and not the other way around. He gave me a long look like he was sizing me up. He probably could have taken me...

Specifically, a Snowberry Clearwing (Hemaris diffinis), sipping from Swamp Milkweed (Asclepias incarnata). Also, some beetles are totally doin' it in the corner.

You know, somebody probably brought this chair out to the meadow for their loved one to sit in and admire the flowers and trees, but to me it was a non sequitur.
