This is what Wikipedia has to tell us about this Castle; The castle originated in the 13th century. Around 1270, Zweder I van Zuylen van Abcoude built a freestanding keep on a raised and moated site near the lost city Dorestad. Until the beginning of the 15th century Duurstede Castle was in possession by the Van Zuylen van Abcoude family, until they were forced to sell it to the bishops of Utrecht in 1449. Bishop David of Burgundy, who reigned from 1459 to 1496, completely rebuilt the castle. The old donjon was enclosed by new buildings. The still intact burgundian tower was also built around this time. His successors Frederick IV of Baden and Philip of Burgundy also used the castle as their residence, and Philip of Burgundy embellished the castle with renaissance features. After Philip's death, Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor confiscated all territorial possessions of the bishopric of Utrecht, including Duurstede Castle. Later years In 1580, as a result of the Dutch Revolt, the castle fell into the hands of the States of Utrecht. The states, however, invested their money into building modern fortification around Wijk bij Duurstede, and as a result the castle fell into neglect. Further damage was done when french troops devastated Wijk by Duurstede in 1672, after which the townspeople used stone from the castle to rebuild their homes. In 1852 the town council became owner of the castle and turned the surrounding fortifications into a park. Until 1925 the castle could only be reached by a little ferry.

A SOOC (of course :) ) This picture is taken at sunrise. Viewing at the place where the Rhine becomes The Lek (for one or another reason this river changes several times his name in The Netherlands...) The Rhine (together with The Waal) is one the two major rivers in The Netherlands, which Amsterdam and Rotterdam (Europe's largest harbour) connects with the main land in Germany (Ruhrgebiet). Wijk bij Duurstede. Although lying on the banks of this river and The Amsterdam-Rijn Canal. Wijk bij Duurstede has only a very small port. Wijk bij Duurstede is an old village, in the past (17th century) it was a very prosperous village, due to its location. One can see that in the beautiful center of this small village. That a decay came can be seen from the church tower, which has never been build completely (It ought to become higher than our largest church tower, De Dom at Utrecht). It has a flat roof and about half his hight which was intended. Wijk bij Duurstede possesses the only drive-through windmill in the world. It is build in 1659 and restored in 1997. It's called Rijn en Lek because the river changes its name from Rijn into Lek at Wijk bij Duurstede. Now a day Wijk is a tourist resort which very much art shops and artists. Although the Dutch Wiki is far better, you can get some extra information here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wijk_bij_Duurstede

The Roman Warrior is now standing in the Lower Rhine, protecting the ships passing by
Made by wandelgraaf
This photo is taken in a town called Wijk bij Duurstede, wich has a a very intresting history, it was the most northern outpost of the Roman empire, on the European continent and it was a few centuries later destroyed by the Vikings, the Roman empire had totally no intrest in the part of what is the Netherlands today north of the Rhine, what was in those days, basicly a swamp and land what was flooded most of the time, This warrior wich is normally on the side of a parking lot wich is complete flooded by the hgih rising of the Lower Rhine as it is called here, basicly it is funny because on the little sign beside the left of the lamppost there is written on: 'the grassfield is newly sawed so don't enter it, well ok the city have also an other concern less, they do not have to worry wether it get's enough water The water level in the Rhine is the highest in 15 years

Nederrijn - Wijk bij Duurstede - The Netherlands Nederrijn (Lower Rhine) is the name of the Dutch part of the Rhine River from the confluence at the town of Angeren of the cut-off Rhine bend of Oude Rijn and the Pannerdens Kanaal (which was dug to form the new connection between the Waal and Nederrijn branches). The city of Arnhem lies on the right (north) bank of the river Nederrijn, just past the branching-off of the River IJssel. The Nederrijn flows on to the city of Wijk bij Duurstede, from where it continues as the River Lek. The once-important but now small Kromme Rijn branch (in Roman times part of the Limes Germanicus and border river of the Roman Empire) carries the name Rhine towards the city of Utrecht. . Normally you can park your car here :)

Camera: Canon Ixus 130 The European Peacock (Inachis io), more commonly known simply as the Peacock butterfly, is a colourful butterfly, found in Europe, temperate Asia as far east as Japan. It is the only member of the genus Inachis (the name is derived from Greek mythology, meaning Io, [the daughter] of Inachus). It should not be confused or classified with the American peacocks in the genus Anartia; these are not close relatives of the present species. The Peacock butterfly is resident in much of its range, often wintering in buildings or trees. It therefore often appears quite early in spring.

[Cyber One H. Stroucken]
