Take up Angling???
Made by marmalade2008
The night before last I was out at Whitehaven. There was a good number of fishermen at the end of the pier near the lighthouse. It seemed a very contented group, out on a beautiful evening and enjoying another amazing sunset. One fishermen on his way back commented on the African sunset and how he was glad it was been recorded. It got me thinking. I'd always thought fishing was just for the very patient and even tedious, waiting for the catch. But I've changed my view. Enjoying the peace and environment of beautiful places at the beginning and end of each day is the same for us all. Just different end results. They go home with a fish supper whereas I take home a fresh snap!!!! Oooh, and I have been reliably informed that the great sunsets of present are due to a volcano in Russia. The dust particles are enhancing our sunsets at the moment!!!

Red Arrows
Made by Horrgakx
A snap in 2003 during the Whitehaven Maritime Festival. The camera was a Canon D60 and the lens was the 28-300 L IS USM. The Red Arrows had just completed a climb and they turned over and started fanning out. I tried to keep the composition to the rule of thirds. Modest Photoshop editing was done, mainly to increase the contrast of the smoke trails against the sky. The aperture used was mid-range as was the focal length. The shutter speed was quick to add detail to the smoke trails. The Red Arrows is the aerobatics display team of the Royal Air Force, based at RAF Scampton, Lincolnshire, UK (soon to be RAF Waddington). They were formed in late 1964 as an all-RAF team, replacing a number of unofficial teams that had been sponsored by RAF commands. We were lucky to get this impressive and world-renowned aerobatics team to our humble town.

'Fisherman' Anchor
Made by Horrgakx
Taken on one of my photography course field trips, this picture is created from a series of 5 hand-held shots with different exposures then tonemapped in Photomatix. Two textures were added (rust and a bokeh) in Photoshop, the foreground was masked. I wanted to achieve the gritty approach with bags of texture, I'm pleased with the result. The title is so because this Fisherman anchor is the most commonly recognised ships' anchor. I've had it printed and framed exactly as it appears above, it looks amazing. Please, .

Wellington Pit: Candlestick Chimney
Made by seanduffy.me
The Candlestick chimney is located in Whitehaven, and is designed to help remove toxic gas from old mine workings. The chimney is based upon a design of a candlestick from the Lowther castle in Whitehaven - hence the name. The other building in the photo is of Wellington Lodge - home to Whitehaven's coastguard team. The Lodge and the Candlestick are the only remaining (visible) parts of Whitehavens Wellington Pit. Its twin shafts were sunk between 1840 and 1845. Wellington Pit was the site of Whitehaven's largest mining disaster in 1910, in which 136 miners lost their lives.

African sunset visits Whitehaven
Made by marmalade2008
What another lovely evening last night - we are really being spoiled of late. There were lots of fishermen on the pier at Whitehaven. One finishing for the night commented on the African sunset and how glad he was someone was photographing it. Recently we've had a lot of good sunsets. Yes, I know, the sun isn't actually on this photo. It had dropped away just to the right out of view earlier and what was left was a light haze over the sea. What a lovely, lovely evening.

The Candlestick
Made by buddah1888
Towering above the harbour, Wellington pit was by far the most spectacular of Whitehaven's pits. It was built in the form of a castle, with a great keep, turrets and enormous crenellated walls. Its twin shafts were sunk between 1840 and 1845. The architect of the surface buildings was Sydney Smirke. The design of the 'candlestick chimney' is reputed to be based on a candlestick in the Castle. The chimney is all that remains

Old tyre
Made by Horrgakx
An old tyre lying on the Golden Sands beach. As soon as I saw this I knew it might be a little interesting, I loved the coarse textures of the barnacles on the tyre contrasted by the soft movement of the water. I shot 3 or 4 individual shots, then parts from each were blended together. This shot isn't a full HDR, rather the elements I liked from each shot are combined together to produce this.

075-365
Made by Cazzo3
Sunrise at Whitehaven harbour interesting note on day 74 of my 365 day project I took a picture of Jesus Christ and I asked him where my new camera was!!! well he's got no control over UPS but he does have control over the weather, and it just goes to show when the weathers and light is right it doesn't matter what camera you've got !!! I still can't wait for my new camera to come though

Whitehaven Evening
Made by Horrgakx
The old slipway into the marina. This is a blend of several different exposures and using Layer Masks, in order to get the exposure balanced. A little cloning was required to get rid of a vehicle on the slipway. Exposures ranged from a couple of seconds through to about 40 seconds to get the range of light. Aperture was right down the middle at f8

Still harbour
Made by Horrgakx
Across Whitehaven harbour. I love the clean smooth colours throughout the picture and the texture of the wall and tyres. As my first HDR attempt I went overboard and it is comprised of around 13 differently exposed shots. As a result the first attempt didn't turn out well but I revisited this picture some time after I'd taken it.

Whitehaven fireworks 4th July
Made by Horrgakx
Sellafield Limited put this display of fireworks on 4th July 2009. This image is blended a mix of exposures then adjusted mainly for local contrast, brightness & saturation. Subtle detail from the shadow areas was added but not too much as to detract from the main subject. I liked the look of the sea which is quite metallic.

Noctilucent Clouds Whitehaven
Made by mlwats
Noctilucent Clouds taken from Whitehaven Harbour, Cumbria. UK. 557 Photo's composed into a timelapse video. Taken between 1.15am - 3.20am. 3 second exposure. F/5 ISO 800 The sunrise washed them out to the end, so changed to 2 second exposure for the last 20 shots. 2 hours compressed, into just over a minute.

Harbour triptych
Made by Horrgakx
One of two large canvas triptych pictures I am selling. Each of the 3 sections is 40 x 20, ideal for a large wall. This was taken at Whitehaven's historic slipway at dusk. The rich blue tone is interspersed with orange and greens making a very complete wall picture. Please contact me if you're interested!

The Vulcan approaches
Made by Horrgakx
XH-558, the only flying Avro Vulcan, on its approach to Whitehaven from the north. Just thought this was a little bit different rather than simply getting the aircraft in flight. Workington dock cranes are visible in the distance, centre of picture. This picture was featured in the Times & Star.

the beacon
Made by S Brannon [finally got my account back!]
The Beacon reflected in the window of the pump house opposite. 3 exposure HDR at -2, 0,+2 tomemapped in Photomatix using Details Enhancer. Some dodge and burn in Photoshop on the brickwork then flipped the image to get the writing the right way round. Whitehaven, west Cumbria, UK

morning at the harbour
Made by S Brannon [finally got my account back!]
View from the viewing gallery of The Beacon looking over Whitehaven harbour towards Bransty. Taken using a circular polarising filter and converted to black and white in photoshop using the infra red filter. Some dodge and burn on the water and sky. Whitehaven, west Cumbria, UK

Crackerjack and Achilles
Made by f0rbe5
A peaceful scene in the harbour at Whitehaven, with the bright red Crackerjack in the foreground and the pastel shades of the Achilles in the background being touched-up by the laid-out owner. Note the statue on the capstan on the end of the Sugar Tongue Quay in the background.

UNEXPECTED VISITORS
Made by keith rodney
I was busy taking pictures of the waves in my local harbour when out of the blue these swans came along . I carried on taking pictures of the waves not knowing that the swans would be the star of the show ......... I would also love to wish everybody a wonderful 2011

Whitehaven harbour
Made by marmalade2008
There is so much history in Whitehaven and the harbour is fascinating with loads of weather-worn sea walls, stone steps, buildings and oodles of opportunity to snap. I don't know the proper names for everything. This is taken in the bit before the lock!!!

Crows Nest (light test)
Made by Horrgakx
Quick test trying to balance light levels between interior and exterior. The challenge was an extremely bright, warm colour temperature interior lit by artificial lighting and the background which was a much cooler temperature and several stops darker.
