No. 7 'Tom Rolt' Tom Rolt was built at the Talyllyn's Pendre Works, incorporating components of a little-used 3ft gauge Andrew Barclay 0-4-0WT built in 1949 for Bord na Mona (the Irish turf board). An 0-4-2T, it is the line's newest, largest and most powerful steam locomotive, having entered service in 1991. It is named after the author L.T.C. Rolt who inspired the Talyllyn's preservation and was its General Manager in 1951-52. In August 2000 Tom Rolt returned to service after its 10-yearly boiler inspection and overhaul; it currently carries the standard TR deep bronze green livery. Talyllyn Railway
Made by mikehillman1983
The Talyllyn Railway was built in 1865 to transport slate from quarries in the Welsh mountains to the coastal town of Tywyn. In 1951 the railway became the first railway in the world to be preserved when it was taken over by the Talyllyn Railway Preservation Society and the line has been almost entirely volunteer operated ever since. I haven't visited the line since 2001, so was very excited to get the chance to return this year. This shot shows one of the railways original locomotives, the 1865 built 'Talyllyn', being refuelled in the yard at Tywyn Wharf station.

Talyllyn Museum Piece
Made by Kevin R Boyd
There was just time to nip round the museum before they closed the doors. This locomotive looks a little strange in this climate of Health and Safety gone mad - no cab, no safety rails, and not a great deal of comfort of any sort. If I remember rightly, a locomotive just like this was featured in the Railway books of Rev. W Audrey, as one of the fleet building the Skarloey railway. This is no coincidence: Skarloey trains were all based on Talyllyn rolling stock! I will stick my neck out and say this is the image of the locomotive Skarloey before his cab was added.

Talyllyn Railway number 1 Talyllyn at Towyn Wharf (now 'Tywyn') in summer 1966. The very close proximity of the BR tracks is shown by the BR standard coal truck immediately behind the loco.. Talyllyn was one of the original locos on the line, first built as an 0-4-0ST, and later converted to an 0-4-2ST to improve its ride qualities.

Talyllyn, single truck coach (First Class)
Made by Kevin R Boyd
Part of the vintage train consist, this coach would have been positively luxurious on a small scale, but not sure the ride would have been all that comfortable given the single truck wheelbase.

The best part of two saloons was booked by a coach tour company, which must be good for business and raising funds for preservation and restoration work.

Sir Haydn close-up

He's a fine looking engine! The coaches, by the way, only have doors on this side of the train, whereas the locomotive has access on both sides.
