The subalpine volcanic landscape of Tongariro National Park was a wonderland of lichens, mosses, & fungi. Actually, a lot of New Zealand was -- if I had stopped for a macro shot of everything that caught my eye, we'd still be there (and we wouldn't have seen anything else)! This one was white on top and black on the bottom. Maybe Pannoparmelia angustata? Habitat is right: P. angustata is a strongly photophilous species frequently found at forest margins, and in canopy twigs, and on subalpine shrubs of open river flats in mountainous areas, or in the scrub layer above bushline. Construction date: 1929 - Architectural style: neo-Georgian. Chateau Tongariro is a New Zealand hotel and resort complex. Now officially titled Bayview Chateau Tongariro, the building was completed in 1929 and, despite extensive refurbishment, still retains much of the style of the pre-Depression era. It is located close to Whakapapa skifield on the slopes of Mount Ruapehu, and is close to the volcanic peaks of Mount Tongariro and Mount Ngauruhoe, within the boundaries of Tongariro National Park, New Zealand's oldest.

Taken from a float plane taken from Taupo. The central plateau of New Zealand's North Island is volcanic and snow capped. The 3 mountains are Ruapehu, Ngaurahoe and Tongariro. There are also lakes. The geography can only really be appreciated from above. It was an amazing place and anyone visiting this area would be well advised to give it a go (and get there early to bag the seat next to the pilot!)

mount ngauruhoe, better know as mount doom in the lord of the rings movies, this is a very regularly shaped active volcano in tongariro national park. the famous tongariro crossing hike goes past it but not to the top. the climb isn't hard, but it's a long way up a pretty steep slope of loose ashes and rubble; not the most enjoyable terrain to hike on.

The chateau glows from the late afternoon sun as the darkness of an autumn evening descends. I left the mountain etc underexposed to emphasise the view I saw, which was the chateau building glowing in the encroaching darkness. Lightening the foreground and mountain lost the impact of the light against the darkness.


Mount Ruapehu and the Chateau Tongariro

Mt. Ruapehu (the highest point in the North Island at 2797 m.) is one of three active volcanoes in the Tongariro National Park, which is a listed dual World Heritage Area. At its foot is the impressive Chateau Tongariro hotel. Ruapehu last erupted in Sept. 2007.

Dag 12: Whakapapa Village, Tongariro National Park. Parkeerplaats naast het bezoekerscentrum. De weg loopt hier door naar het ski-resort. Het bezoekerscentrum was ook een kleine museum waarin de omgeving, vulkanisme, natuur en ski-toerisme aan bod kwam.

I love the lakes of the central plateau taken from a float plane over the mountains. I can definitely recommend this trip. Take the float plane from Taupo and make sure you grab the seat next to the pilot!
