I was zoning out watching television, when the emergency broadcast system interrupted my show to warn me of a possible tsunami. I was shocked, and for a moment wondered if this was a mistaken warning. I quickly flipped to a news channel only to discover that a magnitude 8.9 earthquake had shaken Japan. My heart sank, as the images of disaster blinked on the screen. The most amazing showed the tsunami crashing through a city, wiping out everything in its path. My thoughts are with everyone affected by this earthquake, and I pray for a swift recovery. I am relieved to hear that my family friends, who live outside Tokyo, are safe. Please keep us updated, Shibata family. We love you! P.S. This is my first attempt at levitation photography. What do you think? kates365photos.blogspot.com/

Ships Coffee Shop, Wilshire at Glendon, Westwood, Los Angeles, 1974

Ships Coffee Shop, Wilshire at Glendon, Westwood, Los Angeles, 1974
Made by nick f2007
Forgive the poor photo quality. The Martin Stern-designed restaurant opened in 1958 and was long known as a prime example of Googie architectural design. Regrettably the tall space-age sign is not seen here. Ships was as unconventional inside as out. If The Jetsons had enjoyed going to a coffee shop, it would have looked like Ships. And on each table was a toaster for customers' individual use. In 1984 it gave way to a particularly uninspired high-rise. In the background is the Westwood Center tower, known to older Westwoodians for its top-floor Monty's restaurant and relieved somewhat of its 1960s blandness by a reskinning. There are those who consider the Mercedes-Benz 280SE cabriolet whizzing toward the Glendon stoplight as iconic as Ships!

Mimus Polyglottos Youth

Mimus Polyglottos Youth

This Mockingbird fledgling appears to have been new to the world of controlled flight. As I walked along, I saw one small bird very clumsily landing in this bush. Another bird (a Black Phoebe) buzzed it defensively. When I went closer to see what was going on, I noticed that the clumsy bird was this very young Mockingbird. The Black Phoebe retreated to watch from a safe distance. The fledgling kept watching me, but didn't move away. I pulled my camera out, and got off four shots from pretty close range before it finally tried to fly away. (The shot was at 46mm, and I only cropped off a tiny bit.) It barely made it to the next bush over (blurry in the background). I left it alone after that.

The Los Angeles Mormon Temple 10777 Santa Monica Boulevard Los Angeles, California 90025-4718 Yes is was just another boring sunny day in LA without a cloud in the sky. I was across the street running an errand and decided I needed to grab the camera out of the car and take a shot of this example of classic LA architecture. If I had time I should have gone onto the grounds to get closer. camera: Fujifilm GA645ZI film: Kodak TMAX 100 filter: Nikon O56 orange support: hand held scan: NCPS

Stranger than fiction

Stranger than fiction
Made by [ r ♥ c e y t ♥ y ] {I br♥ke for bokeh}
When I saw this in the botanical gardens I immediately thought Shrike tree! The spikes really are that big and pointy; Tree of Pain! Stranger than fiction, yes? Yes! Hence the title. For those scratching their heads? Again, processed with an 0rated preset; Raceytay. Pretty much everything on this stream that was done in ROAR? 0rated Preset. I should just dump them all in that set, yes? Heh. No.

This little panhandler ran right up to me, despite a wealth of natural food in the UCLA botanical garden. Unfortunately, people feed them, which makes them fearless and aggressive. This introduced species competes with native gray squirrels; read more about their history in Southern California here. EXPLORE Feb. 27, 2009 #326

Broad Art Center at UCLA

Amazing what ugly ducklings can turn into. The Dickson Art Center at UCLA wasn't exactly pretty at age 40... now, the Broad Art Center, courtesy of Eli Broad, is very pretty at night. During the day it's not so impressive-- they reused the foundation of the old building which caused some *significant* limitations, but I suspect saved quite a bit of money or something... but hey, it's not bad. Now only if they can renovate Bunche...

also? A hummingbird. From the Mildred Something Something Botanic Gardens at UCLA. I went back to see if I could find Mildred (remember her?) I found her old nest and her decendents. They are decidedly camera shy. One of them is in that mess somewhere. Rly. Trly. Hnstly. tweet

Cat's tail aloe (Aloe castanea)

Cat's tail aloe (Aloe castanea)
Made by nowhereonearth
This tree-form aloe has long, cylindrical racemes bearing densely-packed flowers with dark nectar. The flower spikes are long, unbranched, grow out at angles,(including sideways, as this one is), and are often twisted in shape. Photographed at the Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden at UCLA, which is old enough that mature plants like this one have hidden or missing labels somewhere in the undergrowth!

skirt (Aloe sp.)

skirt (Aloe sp.)
Made by nowhereonearth
One of many aloe species with 'skirts', dried foliage that clings to stalks well below fresher green foliage. It is thought that the persistence of dead leaves is an adaptation that protects these tree aloes from fire damage in their native South Africa. Photographed at the Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden at UCLA.

Marilyn.

...at least, that's how it looks, but the dark red substance oozing out of this Australian native tree (and making the ground around it look like the aftermath of a crime scene) is kino, a resinous sap. It doesn't feel sticky or oily, but dries to a brittle translucent substance that is water-soluble. Photographed at the Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden at UCLA.

Anchor plant (Colletia paradoxa or C. cruciata)

Who'd have thought a plant looked like jet planes (it's also known as jet plane plant and crucifixion plant). It has tiny flowers (said to smell like custard, but I'll pass on leaning in to get a whiff), while remaining nearly leafless. Its flattened gray-green stems take care of photosynthesis. Photographed at the Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden at UCLA.

yes, i was the angry person ramming myself against the vending machine before giving in and feeding the devil machine another $1.25 in order to buy another one to dislodge the snack. i didn't have time to eat all day and it was like 8pm when i finally walked home from my night seminar. at least i was victorious in the end...albeit with 2 bags of crisps....

~ Oscar Wilde For Fulvio and his kind words. Advising you to is likely redundant; you cannot have missed it. I, on the other hand, am missing EVERYTHING. Someone (I am not pointing fingers) neglected to tell my boss I came to work today for a reprieve from work, not for MORE OF IT. Pls bear with me. This too shall pass. It better pass. Soon.

Firebush (Hamelia patens)

Firebush (Hamelia patens)

Clusters of short-lived scarlet flowers covered these stems--each white or brown spot marks where one was attached before it fell to the ground. Come to think of it, the brown ones might have been pollinated and be developing into berries. Photographed at the Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden at UCLA.

Farewell, kind flickr. Also? Long farewell. Or so it feels. Emerging from the mountain of work on my desk. I even managed to get out this morning for fifteen minutes and take some photos! Poor Ari, if he weren't locked up he'd have a layer of dust on him. This is another from LA earlier this month. It isn't even pink, is it? Woe is me.

It grows right-side up on the tree, but on a very windy day, this flower looked less beat up photographed upside down. Compare it to to the red Calliandra shrubs also in the Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden at UCLA. This one grows on quite a large tree.
