The Haarlemmerpoort (gateway) or the Willemspoort at the Haarlemmerplein are in fact the fifth Haarlemmerpoort which occur in the history of Amsterdam. At each town extension the city gate slid a bit on to the west, towards direction of Haarlem. In my opinion it's a bad imitation of the Greek and Roman temples. Nobody in Amsterdam notice this ugly building anymore. My personal challenge was to make a beautiful photo of this ugly building. On a lucky sunday morning the sun brighten up the surface and it seems the glory days of the Haarlemmerpoort came back for a couple of minutes. All I had to do was just to press the camera button. In Amsterdam ziet niemand meer deze poort staan. Gemeente Amsterdam wilde dit gebouw al een paar keer slopen. De uitdaging voor mij was een mooie foto maken van deze lelijke imitatie van een klassiek Griekse en Romeinse tempel. Op een mooie zondag morgen scheen het licht prachtig en het leek of de mooie historische dagen van weleer weer even terug kwamen. Ik hoef te alleen maar de camera knop in te drukken! De Haarlemmerpoort of de Willemspoort aan het Haarlemmerplein is in feite de vijfde Haarlemmerpoort die voorkomt in de geschiedenis van Amsterdam. Bij elke stadsuitbreiding schoof de stadspoort een stukje op naar het westen, richting Haarlem. In 1837 was de voorganger van de huidige poort, de in 1618 naar ontwerp van Hendrick de Keyser voltooide Haarlemmerpoort, zo bouwvallig geworden dat besloten werd tot afbraak. Drie jaar later verrees, vlakbij de plek van de vorige, de huidige poort. In die tijd hadden de stadspoorten hun oorspronkelijk verdedigende functie verloren en dienden nu overwegend als ‘barrière’ om heffing van stedelijke belastingen mogelijk te maken. Zo ook de Willemspoort, waarvan het interieur diende ter huisvesting van de met de accijnzen inning belaste commiezen en enkele wachthoudende militairen. De poort is een goed voorbeeld van de neo-classicistische bouwstijl uit de eerste helft van de 19e eeuw; een ‘strenge’ interpretatie van de klassiek Griekse en Romeinse tempelarchitectuur. Na de afschaffing van de stedelijke accijns in 1866 bleef de poort (gedeeltelijk) als politiepost in gebruik, hoewel er stemmen voor sloop opgingen. Stemmen die luider werden toen in 1877 de aansluitende en aan de veldzijde gelegen brug in zuidelijke richting werd verplaatst. In 1889 besloot de gemeenteraad van de gemeente Amsterdam tot sloop van de poort, ten behoeve van een nieuw gebouw voor politie en brandweer. Na jarenlang geharrewar werd dit besluit op 18 april 1900 weer ongedaan gemaakt en besloten tot restauratie.

(uncut) The Spaardammerbuurt is a quarter constructed in the twenties of the last century for the workers of the quickly expanding harbour and industry. Depicted here are the sculpted sweeping lines of “Het Schip” (the ship) a typical example of Amsterdam School architecture. It’s a building block which integrates houses, a school and a post office. It was conmpleted in 1921.The nickname was selected because its morphology. The sculpted and non-functionalist, expressionistic architecture of the Amsterdam school was the romantic reaction to the then very popular functionalistic stark forms of modernist design which preached “form follows function”. In the Amsterdam School architects saw buildings as sculptures and works of art in their own right. The function of a building came second. Elaborate and sweeping brick constructions were often used. Organic forms were a strong inspiration. There was however a very modern aspect to the Amsterdam school, but it is hidden in the construction – on crucial points in the building reinforced concrete provides the necessary strength. The Ship was designed by Michel de Klerk, one of the most prominent architects of the Amsterdam School.

Highest position on Explore: #15 on Saturday, August 21, 2010 The KRI Dewaruci (sometimes spelled Dewa Ruci or Dewarutji; KRI: Kapal Perang Republik Indonesia) is a Class A tall ship owned and operated by the Indonesian Navy. She is used as a sail training vessel for naval cadets and is the largest tall ship in the Indonesian fleet. The Dewaruci also serves as a goodwill ambassador for the country of Indonesia to the rest of the world. Built in Germany by HC Stülcken & Sohn, the Dewaruci is a barquentine. Construction on the Dewaruci began in 1932, but was suspended due to the outbreak of World War II, which caused heavy damage to the shipyard where she was being constructed. She was finally completed in 1952 and launched in 1953. Since then, she has been based out of Surabaya on the Java Sea. Her name and figurehead represent and display the mythological Indonesian god of truth and courage. Until now, KRI Dewaruci is still operational and periodicaly visits other foreign countries to meet other tall ships around the world. The Dewaruci also participates in tall ship races and events around the world. As a unique feature, the ship has her own marching band. In 2010 the Dewaruci's marching band delighted and entertained the crowds in Amsterdam at Sail 2010.

Luckily I have mostly recovered from my Killer-cold/Ear-infection experience and I'm really looking forward to 2 days of rest and severe chilling out in La Casa AmsterS@m. At the Bambini Event I ran accidentally along these two colorful characters and could not resist to make a nice snapshot. Too bad you don't see much of such positive and colorful photos on Flickr :) Begin Oktober vindt in de inspirerende omgeving van de Westergasfabriek te Amsterdam het eerste, jaarlijkse Bambini Event plaats. De Westergasfabriek en het bijbehorende Westerpark zullen het podium zijn voor de eerste bruisende editie van het Bambini Event, een bijzondere mix van romantiek en avantgarde op het gebied van kindermode, lifestyle, wonen, cultuur, buitenleven, heerlijkheden, fun2buy producten, uitgaan en veel meer ondeugende engelachtigheid maakt het Bambini Event onderscheidend anders. Een beurs niet echt voor mij maar ik liep toevallig langs deze twee kleurijke figuren en kon het niet laten even een leuke snapshot te maken. Jammer dat je dit soort positieve en kleurrijke foto's niet veel tegen komt op Flickr :)


NS 2279: Ready for turn out? Klaar om uit te rukken?

Well not really... In 1972 the late NS 2279 derailed near the village of Halfweg (Halfway / Mi-Chemin), that is located halfway between Amsterdam and Haarlem. It ended its ride in the field next to the railroad. Despite the fact that this locomotive just had been overhauled in the Tilburg workshops, it eventually would be scrapped on site. The reason was that this land is in fact a swamp/peat combination. The longer the locomotive was left there, the more it was sucked deeper and deeper into the muddy soil. After nearly 40 years now, there still is one bogie and a part of the chassis stuck in the ground. Invisible for the eye, but undoubtedly one day food for thought for future archaeologists. The fresh new sand slope was meant to re-enforce the damaged dike on which the railroad is constructed. Halfweg NH - 24 november 1972

Photo taken at the Amsterdam Historical museum of the Sloterdijk bridge. Below same situation today. De nieuwe teertuinen vanaf het Prinseneiland met brug naar Galgenstraat. Foto genomen in het Amsterdamse Historisch museum. Sloterdijkbrug, een houten ophaalbrug naar het Prinseneiland. De Westelijke Eilanden zijn een drietal eilanden in het centrum van Amsterdam. De eilanden zijn gelegen ten zuiden van het IJ, ten westen van de Centraal Station en ten noorden van de Haarlemmerstraat - Haarlemmerdijk. Tot de Westelijke Eilanden behoren het Bickerseiland, Prinseneiland en Realeneiland, oorspronkelijk het Voor-, Midden- en Achtereiland geheten. De Westelijke eilanden vormen een klein wereldje op zichzelf, geschikt voor wandelingen en vaak het decor voor filmopnamen.

Sinds maandag 08 augustus 2011 rijdt Locon een nieuwe vervoer tussen Nordhausen en Amsterdam Westhaven. De lading betreft porfier (split) en is bestemd voor Rotim Steenbouw b.v. in de Amsterdamse Vlothaven. Voor deze trein zet Locon een Voith Maxima 40cc in. Op donderdag 11 augustus kwam Locon met de tweede slag naar Amsterdam Westhaven. Nadat ik maandag helaas niet lang bij het uithalen kon zijn, was de vreugde ook groot dat het plaatsen van de wagens ook wat vertraging opliep. We zien Locon 401 met 30 VTG Eanos wagens beladen met porfier de Amsterdamse Vlothaven binnen rollen. En zowaar wilde de zon meewerken.


SFB-6601+ITL-gasolietrein_Awhv_27102009

Vandaag was de eerste inzet van SFB tractie voor een ITL NYK shuttle. Vanaf vandaag gaat dit planmatig gebeuren voor de Rheinhausen NYK shuttle. Na het afleveren van de NYK shuttle op de ACT terminal in de Amsterdamse Houtrakpolder ging SFB 6601 als losse loc richting de Amsterdamse Coenhaven. Daar haalde de loc een andere ITL trein op, namelijke de gasolietrein. De opnamen toont SFB 6601 met aan de haak 21 ketelwagens op het emplacement van Amsterdam Coenhaven. Zoals aan de foto wel te zien is, was het er behoorlijk donker en koste het mijn camera enige moeite om nog een acceptable plaatje te klikken.

Last weekend Monumental Productions celebrated the 10 year anniversary of the Awakenings parties. The location, de Gashouder at the Westergasfabriekterein in Amsterdam, is amazing! The party stands for real quality techno and the founder, Rocco Veenboer, always booked the best techno artists. About 9 years ago I started to work for Awakenings behind the bar and ended as a stagemanager at the parties. In this period I saw the event grow from a small underground party to the best techno show where it comes to sound and vision. Technorati Profile


Hembrugterrein old military compound

View On Black! Last Tuesday I went on Haven Safari through the harbors of Amsterdam and Zaandam. Saw amazing stuff I never knew about the harbor. This building is on a former military compound, Hembrugterrein, where they used to fabricate and test ammunition. Unfortunately only 1 inside shot because we could only stay here for less than 10 minutes. Created from 3 RAW files, processed in Photoshop and Lightroom.

Sinds begin augustus komt Locon elke maandag en donderdag naar de Amsterdamse Vlothaven voor het lossen van porfier (split). En net als vorige week donderdag, verliep alles met enige vertraging. Locon 401 is klaar met het plaatsen van 20 beladen VTG Eanos'n en de machinist is al bezig de loc los te koppelen. Onder best wel slecht licht en lichte regen staat het geheel netjes te poseren op de kade van Rotim (coentunnel zijde) in de Amsterdamse Vlothaven. Voor degene met scherpe ogen, op de achtergrond is een schipper bezig zo'n auto te lossen.

05/09/2010; An applicable picture for 2 reasons. First, I'll be flying to England for the weekend tonight, and I don't think I'll be on the internet a lot until I'm back home on Sunday evening. Second, let's say that this is my way to commemorate the fallen victims of 9/11. And yes, this plane and the Kraanspoor building are just fine. :) Oh, and by the way... sorry if I haven't been able to check out your photostream yet if you have commented on 1 of my previous pictures. I have been a little busy with one and another the past few days.

A few weeks ago a contact of my posted a comment on this photo with a challenge. His challenge for me was to capture some thing in my crystal ball that has anything do with modern Dutch. So that’s why I captured this wind turbine in my crystal ball. Everybody knows that windmills are typically Dutch so a wind turbine has a relationship with the windmill but just in a modern fashion. I don’t know if I completed the challenge, that’s for my contact to decide.

Een experiment in zwart wit met kleur. Maakt van een dagelijkse verschijning van deze dubbeldekker toch weer een beetje bijzondere foto (naar mijn idee). DD-IRM staat voor dubbeldeks interregiomaterieel. Dit materieel had bij aflevering de naam Regiorunner. Deze dubbeldekkers van de Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) waren bedoeld voor het rijden van interregiotreinen. De eerste treinstam (de 8201) werd op 21 april 1994 overgebracht van Talbot in Aken naar de werkplaats in Leidschendam. An experimenting in black and white with colour.

20/01/2011; Time for a selfie, even though I'm not really recognizable on it. XD Went to take a look at the Sampson, 1 of the biggest crane vessel ships of the world. This new ship, sailing under the Panamese flag, is at the NDSM for a repair job. From there on, it's waiting for it's first job. If a new ship already needs repairing, why do I have the feeling it's going to take a while before this ship will get it's first job? And how come quite a lot of ships are sailing under a Panamese flag anyway?

'Panopticon' On Black well, sort of panopticon. Actually, the building on the photo is the Gas Holder (Gashouder) of the Westergasfabriek, one of the two large gas factories in Amsterdam. Established in 1883, this factory produced coal gas until well into the 20th Century. This gas holder is one of the original structures still there and is now part of a cultuurpark, a location for many cultural events.

Nu de nieuwe kolenterminal van de Rietlanden open is, rijdt DB Schenker ongeveer 5 kolentreinen per week vanuit de Amsterdamse Houtrakpolder. De trein wordt 's nachts klaar gezet bij het oliespoor en de ochtendploeg begint daar z'n dienst. DBS 6469+6464+6463 met +/- 30 Falns'n zijn net aan hun reis richting Duitsland begonnen als trein 49735 (Hrp - Em). Links op de foto is een nieuwe fabriek in aanbouw t.b.v. biobrandstof. De zon staat nog maar amper boven de horizon.
