29 Days to Go Before Seafair 2011: Is Sound Transit Light Rail a White Elephant or White Knight?

29 Days to Go Before Seafair 2011: Is Sound Transit Light Rail a White Elephant or White Knight?
Made by AvgeekJoe
Since this gets so many views, I'll just pose two thoughtful analysises. Then I'll post my POV. White Elephant: Washington Policy Center (WPC): Light Rail, One Year Later: A Train of Broken Promises on July 20, 2010/Light Rail + 1 yr. Mainly focuses on cost, lack of service and ridership. White Knight: Seattle Transit Blog: May 2011 Link Ridership. Ridership up 9% from the year before. Let me put my POV this way: I appreciate the low fares, lets me do more in Seattle as a disabled Skagitonian tourist like a seaplane ride with the savings from less taxi use, but I'm not so sure I want to pay Sound Transit taxe$ just yet... but as WPC notes - the whole hog cost of $7.25 per boarding is a huge bargain compared to a taxi fare from downtown to Boeing Field/Museum of Flight. Huge bargain.

PF Chang's at Westlake Center

Another image from one of the Ektar 100 Test Rolls I shot last weekend: P.F. Chang's at Westlake Center, my favorite Chinese restaurant to go when I want to eat Chinese food that's not really Chinese (fusion), if you know what I mean. Those who have been to P.F. Chang's will know what I'm talking about. I could tell that this film emphasizes reds very well. Even though I'm very pleased with the results of Ekar 100, I doubt I'm going to abandon digital and start shooting film as my primary photographic medium. It cost me over $100 to develop and scan 5 rolls of 120 film, not counting the cost of film. That is simply not cost-effective. Mamiya 7ii 6x7 Rangefinder, 43mm f/4.5, 1/60 sec @ f/5.6, Handheld, Kodak Professional Ektar 100 Color Negative Film. Original 31MB TIFF file scaned at 3588x3024 resolution, 18 April 2009

[2-18-2011] - Food Court

[2-18-2011] - Food Court
Made by J.Sod
A culinary crossroads. Another picture of a shopping mall? Perhaps I do still have a soft spot for them. In actuality I has having a particularly tough day at work, and decided to indulged my rare craving for a Big Mac. I don’t know what it is about the Big Mac but every few months I get a huge Mac attack craving. Honestly its not even that great of a burger. For the price of a meal at McDonalds I could have easily gone somewhere else near my work and gotten a better and comparably priced burger and fries. Some things are better left unexplained I guess. This photo was taken at the Westlake Center Mall. While eating my lunch and people watching, I thought the food court might make for a interesting picture. The end results are OK, but much like my Big Mac, I might have been better off taking my photograph elsewhere.

Camera: Canonet QL17 GIII Film: Ilford Delta 400 Location: Westlake Center, Seattle Escalators seem to be a perfect subject matter for black and white film. The light and dark contrast of the steps create an almost hypnotic look. I took this shot holding the camera at about waist hight, with the focus distance set to around 5 feet. What strikes me about this image is that it captured two individuals from the waist down wearing similar looking pants, giving it a sense of uniformity.

Mike Dublin

Met Mike on the bus to Westlake. Turns out he was an old Seattle transit driver who'd been on many of the design and development committees for the Westlake Station and Metro as a whole. He knows every little detail about how the various stations got built, the design process, and the art in the stations. Great guy! For more information about the transit system, go to the Seattle Transit Blog.

Monorail Glitch

This is the weirdest iPhone-native HDR double-exposure glitch I've encountered thus far. This is my view from the Seattle Center Monorail of the other, approaching train, plus cars below the tracks, plus the reflection off the glass of the buildings behind. I snapped it at the exact moment the trains passed. Taken with my iPhone 4 and and Instagram filter. No additional post-processing or layering programs used.

There's love here, perhaps in more than one place. [Added to the pool as my most favorited image to date -- 2006-03-07; updated 2006-03-22; removed 2006-09-19, as it's long-since been surpassed by my Space Needle at New Years, 2005 shot... though this one still has the highest fav/view ratio of any of my photos, I think.]

My favorite part of a roller-coaster ride is when you're going up and you're slightly scared and really excited. You don't know what's coming next but you know it's going to be good. You can't handle it, go on the carousel. - Gina Gershon

Taken at the Westlake Center in the downtown area of Seattle, Washington on August 13, 2010. Glass ceilings are fun. Four-story malls with glassy ceilings like this one that you can buy candy in are even more fun.
