MacArthur Park in Los Angeles
Made by Dave Toussaint (www.photographersnature.com)
MacArthur Park in Los Angeles can be a pretty place at times, but it seems to be the home of the homeless and smells of it. But it still gives a nice view and photos can turn out nice. The park is divided in two by Wilshire Boulevard. The southern portion primarily consists of a lake, while the northern half includes an amphitheatre, bandshell, soccer fields, and a children's playground along with a recreation center operated by the city of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks. The bandshell was once home to many organizations and events such as Jugaremos en Familia (a live event hosted by Memo Flores for the Hispanic community). MacArthur Park's bandshell has been recently renovated as the Levitt Pavilion is once again the host of jazz, big band, salsa music, and world music concerts. Since reopening it hosts at least 50 free concerts each summer between June and September. The lake in MacArthur Park is fed by natural springs (although an artificial bottom to the lake was laid during the construction of the Metro Red Line, opened in 1993). In the past, a fountain with a reflecting pool on the northern end was also fed by the springs. The Westlake/MacArthur Park Red Line station sits across the street.

Elks Lodge No. 99 / Park Plaza Hotel (1930/2009)
Made by vokoban
Looking at the Elks Lodge from the east side in the middle of MacArthur Park. The building is from 1925 and by architect Claud Beelman. If you are lucky, there will be a nice guard who will let you in and look around. The interior is as spectacular as the exterior. MacArthur Park seems to be much nicer (understatement) than it was in the 90's when I worked in the area. I didn't see one person shooting up heroin. Mostly just a lot of family's and kids playing soccer. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elks_Lodge_No._99_/_Par k_Plaza_Hotel This page has a list of movies that were filmed in this building: www.movielanddirectory.com/tour-location.cfm?location=219... It's not listed on that page but the swimming pool in Cocoon is in the basement of this building. It's where they had those strange alien egg things in the movie.

Another Crawling Bus
Made by tradica
This is another out of sequence time lapse made using images captured on a Canon SD-800-IS with the Ultra Intervalometer uBasic script. Also in this clip is a quick Los Angeles sunrise. The bus images represent a six hour block of time with just over 2,500 images captured. I deleted all the images without a bus and then separated the images into three groups. The first group contained images where the front of the bus was to the right of the street sign. The second group between the white line on 6th street and the street pole. I then loaded each group into video editing software and tediously rearranged the images. CHDK is a firmware enhancement that operates on a number of Canon Cameras. Granny in the Middle - Completed
Made by JoiB
I found the pattern for this square from by Jan Eaton, which I purchased from Amazon. Now all the ends are done and the next step will be to block it which I won't be doing for a while. I used extra fine merino wool from Karabella Yarns for Yarns C and D which I bought from Yarns Unlimited on Pico Blvd. in Santa Monica, CA. Yarns A, B, and E are 50% acrylic and 50% nylon. Unfortunately, I was unable to find all the colors in merino wool, so I had to compromise with the acrylic and nylon fibers. This square was the first part of my experimenting with color, texture, and form. I'm excited to see what further experiments bring.

Royal Viking Motel
Made by TooMuchFire
Just a quick story. I was working as a Production Assistant (gopher, basically) in the location department on a mini-series called Wild Palms back in 1992. My first job in the entertainment business. One of my duties was to carry layout board with me, and put it down on the floors of the locations we were filming at in order to protect them from the fifty-plus crew members stomping around on it with equipment. What I am getting at here is that the joke when we filmed at this hotel was that we needed to put the layout board down in the motel rooms this time to protect US from the location. Yeah, it was nasty. Probably with ten minute rates. And I don't think it's changed much since 1992. Except that now it's just that much older, too. 2025 W. 3rd St., Los Angeles CA.

Bryson Apartments
Made by TooMuchFire
This ten-story Beaux Arts apartment building located on Wilshire near MacArthur Park was built in 1913. It is tied to the literary world, used in the Raymond Chandler novel The Lady in the Lake, and was also used as a location for the movie The Grifters. It was also reportedly a location in the film Double Indemnity, and the actor Fred MacMurray purchased the building, eventually owning it for thirty years. It went through some rough times with the changing neighborhood, but was renovated in the late 1990s. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983 and designated a Historic Cultural Monument by the Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission in 1998. 2701 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles CA.

Bacon Wrapped Clog Kit
Made by tradica
Bacon: A Love Story: A Salty Survey of Everybody's Favorite Meat A hot dog is a type of fully-cooked, cured and/or smoked moist sausage of soft, even texture and flavor. It is usually placed hot in a soft, sliced hot dog bun of approximately the same length as the sausage, and optionally garnished with condiments and toppings. In the United Kingdom and Australia, hot dog refers more commonly to the combination of sausage and bun, with the sausage called a frankfurter. - Wikipedia

800600_70_15 / Bullocks Wilshire, 1980 Mural detail
Made by Larry Gassan
When I first went to the store in 1977 it was an aging 1930s relic. In 1980 I wandered around the mostly abandoned or at least moribund Bullocks Wilshire Dept Store on WIlshire Blvd, Los Angeles. The entire neighborhood had been abandoned by the retail elite for Beverly Hills, Century City, and W LA in the early '60s. The bldg stood vacant, was going to be knocked down, until the SW Univ of Law took it over. There was a lengthy conservancy battle regarding the interiors. If memory serves most of it was preserved. Park Plaza Hotel - relief
Made by TooMuchFire
Located at 607 S. Park View St. at the tip of MacArthur Park in Los Angeles, this Neo-Gothic hotel was originally built in 1925 as an Elks Lodge. It was later turned into a luxury hotel. Currently, it is only used for special events and as a movie location. It has been used in more television shows, movies and commercials than you can imagine. It's a sight to behold - and the underground Olympic sized swimming pool is amazing. Check it out if you're ever able to.

MacArthur Park Administration bldg. (1935/2009)
Made by vokoban
The old photo is from 1935 and is the administration building for MacArthur (orig. Westlake) Park. It is now used as a community center. It appears that what is now the back of the building used to be the front or at least a public entrance. In this shot, the building would have faced south to the park and lake. The lake used to be larger until they routed Wilshire through the park and eventually drained the north side of Wilshire.

Rampart
Made by Clinton Steeds
Before it ever saw air, the FX program The Shield's working title was Rampart. Thankfully, the show moved beyond cheap ripped-from-the-headlines theatrics. It's easier for me to be entertained by fiction; the truth in this case would have been hard to watch on TV. Anyway, the very word Rampart illustrates, for me, the adverserial relationship between the LAPD and the citizens they are supposed to serve.

Love The flavor of hot dog sausages varies widely by region and by personal preference, as do the accompaniments. The flavor of the sausage can resemble a range of similar meat products from bologna on the bland side to the German bockwurst in the spicier varieties. - Wikipedia
