Amsterdam 1735 (Bought by Disney)
Made by Frank Hendriks
This picture was bought by Disney for use in a cartoon. Amsterdam has been called the Venice of the North for its more than one hundred kilometres of canals, about 90 islands and 1,500 bridges. The three main canals, Herengracht, Prinsengracht, and Keizersgracht, dug in the 17th century during the Dutch Golden Age, form concentric belts around the city, known as the grachtengordel. Alongside the main canals are 1550 monumental buildings. Much of the Amsterdam canal system is the successful outcome of city planning. In the early part of the 17th century, with immigration at a height, a comprehensive plan was put together, calling for four main, concentric half-circles of canals with their ends resting on the IJ bay. Known as the grachtengordel, three of the canals are mostly for residential development (Herengracht or ‘’Patricians' Canal’’; Keizersgracht or ‘’Emperor's Canal’’; and Prinsengracht or ‘’Prince's Canal’’), and a fourth, outer canal, the present Nassau/Stadhouderskade, for purposes of defense and water management. The plan also envisaged interconnecting canals along radii; a set of parallel canals in the Jordaan quarter (primarily for the transportation of goods, for example, beer); the conversion of an existing, inner perimeter canal (Singel) from a defensive purpose to residential and commercial development; and more than one hundred bridges. The defensive purpose of the Nassau/Stadhouderskade was served by moat and earthen dikes, with gates at transit points but otherwise no masonry superstructures. Construction proceeded from west to east, across the breadth of the layout, like a gigantic windshield wiper as the historian Geert Mak calls it – not from the center outwards as a popular myth has it. Construction of the north-western sector was started in 1613 and was finished around 1625. After 1664, building in the southern sector was started, although slowly because of an economic depression. The eastern part of the concentric canal plan, covering the area between the Amstel river and the IJ bay, was not implemented for a long time. In the following centuries, the land went mostly for park, the Botanical garden, old age homes, theaters and other public facilities – and for waterways without much plan. Several parts of the city and of the urban area are polders, recognisable by their postfix -meer meaning 'lake', such as Aalsmeer, Bijlmermeer, Haarlemmermeer, and Watergraafsmeer. The Singel encircled the city in the Middle Ages. It served as a moat around the city from 1480 until 1585, when Amsterdam expanded beyond the Singel. The canal runs from the IJ bay, near Central Station, to the Muntplein square, where it meets the Amstel river. It is now the inner-most canal in Amsterdam's semicircular ring of canals. The canal should not be confused with the Singelgracht canal, which became the outer limit of the city during the Dutch Golden Age in the 17th Century. The Herengracht (Patricians' Canal or Lord's Canal) is the first of the three major canals in the city centre of Amsterdam. The canal is named after the heren regeerders who governed the city in the 16th and 17th century. The most fashionable part is called the Golden Bend, with many double wide mansions, inner gardens and coach houses on the Keizersgracht. The Keizersgracht (literal English translation: Emperor's Canal) is the second and the widest of the three major canals in the city centre of Amsterdam, in between the Herengracht and the Prinsengracht. It is named after Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor. The Prinsengracht (Prince's Canal) is the fourth and the longest of the main canals in Amsterdam. It is named after the Prince of Orange. Most of the canal houses along it were built during the Dutch Golden Age of the United Provinces. The bridges over this canal don't connect with the streets in the Jordaan. Interesting sights along the Prinsengracht include the Noorderkerk (Northern Church), the Noordermarkt (Northern Market), the Anne Frank House, the Westerkerk (Western Church, Amsterdam's tallest church) with the Homomonument (Gay Monument). The Zwanenburgwal is a canal and street in the center of Amsterdam. The painter Rembrandt and philosopher Spinoza lived here. In 2006 it was voted one of the most beautiful streets in Amsterdam by readers of Het Parool, a local daily newspaper. The Zwanenburgwal flows from the Sint Antoniessluis sluice gate (between the streets Sint Antoniesbreestraat and Jodenbreestraat) to the Amstel river. The canal was originally named Verversgracht (dyers' canal), after the textile industry that once dominated this part of town. Dyed textiles were hung to dry along the canal. The Brouwersgracht is a canal in the city centre of Amsterdam and is part of the canal belt connecting the Singel, Herengracht, Keizergracht and Prinsengracht and marks the northern border of the canal belt. The Brouwersgracht was voted the most beautiful street in Amsterdam by readers of Het Parool, a local daily newspaper. The Kloveniersburgwal is a canal running south from Nieuwmarkt to the river Amstel on the edge of the medieval city. The east side became populated in the 17th century and has a few rich mansions: like the Trippenhuis, now housing the KNAW. The Kloveniersburgwal was popular with administrators at the Dutch East India Company, being close to its nerve center on Oude Hoogstraat and its warehouse. In one of these buildings a youth hostel is located. @wikipedia.com

Close Encounter: Venus - Jupiter - Moon
Made by B℮n
Please take your time... to View it large on black Soon after sunset on Monday 1 December 2008, the world will be treated to a grand spectacle in the western sky. The brightest planet in the sky, Venus, will have a close encounter with the second brightest planet, Jupiter, as viewed from Earth. The two planets will appear just 2.0° apart at their closest at 9h UT on 1 December. Joining in on the tight Venus-Jupiter formation will be the young crescent Moon, which together with its Earthshine, will produce a wonderful celestial display that will be visible all around the world. Unfortunality the sky wasn't clear for me. But today 2 December the view of the Venus-Jupiter formation could still bee seen. Lucky the sky was partly clear here in Amsterdam. The apparent relative positions of Venus, Jupiter and the Moon will vary somewhat depending upon where people view the event on the Earth. Jupiter and Venus look like they have been drawing closer together over the past month. But in three dimensions the planets are actually separated by nearly 500 million miles (805 million kilometers). Of the eight official planets in the solar system, five are visible at night without the aid of a telescope or binoculars. Jupiter and Venus are particularly bright, partly because both have highly reflective clouds that completely envelop them, but also because Venus is Earth's closest neighbor while Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system. Photo taken on 2nd of December 2008 at 17:31 in Amsterdam, using my camera's maximum 18 x optical zoom or 648mm, ISO 200 and 1/60s (no tripod used - spot metering). Easy to locate just after sunset in the southwestern sky.

My personal challenge
Made by B℮n
The Haarlemmerpoort (gateway) or the Willemspoort at the Haarlemmerplein are in fact the fifth Haarlemmerpoort which occur in the history of Amsterdam. At each town extension the city gate slid a bit on to the west, towards direction of Haarlem. In my opinion it's a bad imitation of the Greek and Roman temples. Nobody in Amsterdam notice this ugly building anymore. My personal challenge was to make a beautiful photo of this ugly building. On a lucky sunday morning the sun brighten up the surface and it seems the glory days of the Haarlemmerpoort came back for a couple of minutes. All I had to do was just to press the camera button.

Lunar meteorites
Made by B℮n
Please take your time... to View it large on black The Moon (Latin: Luna) is Earth's only natural satellite, and is the fifth largest one in the Solar System. The average centre-to-centre distance from the Earth to the Moon is 384,450 km. The side of the Moon that faces Earth is called the near side, and the opposite side the far side. The far side should not be confused with the dark side, which is the hemisphere that is not being illuminated by the Sun at a given moment (this may be the side facing the Earth, as it is once a month during the New Moon phase). The far side of the Moon was first photographed by the Soviet probe Luna 3 in 1959. A meteoroid is a small sand to boulder-sized particle of debris in the Solar system. The visible path of a meteoroid that enters Earth's atmosphere is a meteor, commonly called a shooting star or falling star. Photo taken of the moon's near side from my bedroom window on 22th December 2007. Using my camera's maximum 18 x optical zoom or 648mm.

Westerkerk, Amsterdam - The Netherlands. Crystal ball

Some things just look better Large and on BLACK…… Enjoy!!! Technique: 1/320 exposure f/9.0 ISO 320 105 mm It’s been a while since the last time I took my crystal ball out of its hiding place and a really long time I took it with me in Amsterdam. So I waited until we had some good weather and went out hunting. The Westerkerk (western church) is a Protestant church in Amsterdam, built in 1620-1631 after a design by Hendrick de Keyser. The church is right next to Amsterdam's Jordaan district, at the bank of the Prinsengracht canal. The spire is the highest church tower in Amsterdam, at 85 meters (279 feet). The crown topping the spire is the Imperial Crown of Austria of Maximilian I. The church bells were made by the brothers Hemony. Rembrandt van Rijn was buried in the Westerkerk on October 8, 1669. The exact location of the grave is unknown, but presumed to be somewhere along the northern wall. Rembrandt's lover Hendrickje Stoffels is also buried here, and his son Titus van Rijn may also be. Other painters buried in the Westerkerk are Nicolaes Berchem, Gillis d'Hondecoeter, Melchior d'Hondecoeter and Govert Flinck. The church organ is decorated with doors painted by Gerard de Lairesse. The Westerkerk is located close to the Achterhuis (now Anne Frank House) where diarist Anne Frank, her family and others hid from Nazi persecution for two years during World War II. The Westerkerk is mentioned frequently in her diary - its clock tower could be seen from the attic of the Achterhuis and Anne Frank described the chiming of the clock as a source of comfort. A memorial statue of Frank is located outside the church. Near the Westerkerk is the Homomonument, a memorial for men and women persecuted for their homosexuality. On March 10, 1969 Queen Beatrix (then Princess Beatrix) married Prince Claus in the Westerkerk.

Amsterdam Cityscape and architecture Amsterdam fans out south from the Amsterdam Centraal railway station. The Damrak is the main street and leads into the street Rokin. The oldest area of the town is known as de Wallen (the quays). It lies to the east of Damrak and contains the city's famous red light district. To the south of de Wallen is the old Jewish quarter of Waterlooplein. The 17th century girdle of concentric canals, known as the Grachtengordel, embraces the heart of the city where homes have interesting gables. Beyond the Grachtengordel are the former working class areas of Jordaan and de Pijp. The Museumplein with the city's major museums, the Vondelpark, a 19th century park named after the Dutch writer Joost van den Vondel, and the Plantage neighbourhood, with the zoo, are also located outside the Grachtengordel. Several parts of the city and the surrounding urban area are polders. This can be recognized by the suffix -meer which means lake, as in Aalsmeer, Bijlmermeer, Haarlemmermeer, and Watergraafsmeer. The old city centre is the focal point of all the architectural styles before the end of the 19th century. Jugendstil and Art Deco are mostly found outside the city’s centre in the neighbourhoods built in the early 20th century, although there are also some striking examples of these styles in the city centre. Most historic buildings in the city centre and nearby are houses, such as the famous merchants' houses lining the canals. Through the eye of an ice crystal
Made by B℮n
Ice crystals are a small crystalline form of ice including hexagonal columns, hexagonal plates, dendritic crystals, and diamond dust. Temperature and water vapor humidity determine crystalline forms. A crystal dendrite is a crystal that develops with a typical multi-branching tree-like form. Dendritic crystal growth is very common and illustrated by snowflake formation and frost patterns on a window. Dendritic crystallization forms a natural fractal pattern. The term dendrite comes from the Greek word dendron, which means tree. It's wintertime and the temperature was -5 degrees Celcius. I noticed some beautiful ice crystal structures on my car window. When I looked at them more closely, I saw intensive reflections of the light in them. It's a macro photo of a 10 mm crystal dendrite.

The Gouden Reael is a district of the city of Amsterdam in The Netherlands. A 'Gouden Reael' (golden real) was a Spanish coin from the 16th century. The birth house of Laurens Reael (1583-1637), third Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies, had a golden real on its signpost or gable stone, from which the family took its name. In 1648, the Reael family, which counted several prominent Amsterdam citizens, built a warehouse on the Zandhoek, again with a golden real gablestone. Around 1800 this building turned into a popular inn, De Gouden Reael, which was made famous by a 1940 Jan Mens novel by the same name, and after which the neighborhood has been named. In 1610 and 1615 three artificial islands (Prinseneiland, Bickerseiland and Realeneiland) were build as an extension of the harbor. Until the end of the 19th century this was an area with many wharfs, little industries and warehouses, related to the shipping trades. After the second World war the desolated area was discovered by many artists (Jan Sierhuis, Johan van der Keuken, Jef Diederen, Reinier Lucassen, Peter Schat among others), who established their homes and studios in the vacant buildings. During the second half of the 20th century the old warehouses were transformed into apartments one after another, and new apartments were build. Nevertheless a lot of the atmosphere of the glorious past is still present in the old buildings and wooden drawbridges.

Atlas is an icon in Greek mythology and commonly used in western culture, as a symbol of strength or stoic endurance. He is supporting an enormous round globe on his back and shoulders. The globe originally represented the celestial sphere of ancient astronomy, rather than the earth. The use of the term atlas as a name for collections of terrestrial maps and the modern understanding of the earth. Atlas stands on the Royal Palace at the Dam in Amsterdam. In former days to children it was told that as if Atlas let the ball fall, Amsterdam would go down under! Photo of Altas taken at the Royal Palace in Amsterdam with a partial Eclipse when Earth and Moon are nearly in a straight line created in PS. The light of the partial Eclipse (Ancient Greek from verb, I cease to exist, combined with, I am absent) strikes Atlas the symbol of strength, carrying the world on his shoulder.

Sahara sand on my car!
Made by B℮n
It's quite amazing but my car was all dirty today. According to the news dust from the Sahara gets blown high into the atmosphere and was distributed accross the Netherlands today. The sand was transported more than 2000 km in the atmosphere from the Sahara desert and dropped down on my car when it was raining today. Photo of my car roof. It's full of sand from the Sahara desert which is located more than 2000km from Amsterdam. When it doesn't stop this week we can prepare ourselves on a Amsterdam - Dakar race ;-) M'n auto ziet er dezer dagen viezer uit dan gewoonlijk.

"Once upon a time"

Please take your time... to View it large on black In cultures where demons and witches are perceived as real, fairy tales may merge into legendary narratives, where the context is perceived by teller and hearers as having historical actuality. However, unlike legends and epics, they usually do not contain more than superficial references to religion and actual places, persons, and events; they take place once upon a time rather than in actual times. Photo created in PS by using the towers of the Posthoorn church in Amsterdam and the moon eclipse of 21 February 2008.

Dutch painters of now and then...
Made by B℮n
The Royal Palace in Amsterdam is one of three palaces in the Netherlands which is at the disposal of Queen Beatrix by Act of Parliament. It is situated in the west side of Dam Square in the centre of Amsterdam. It was built by Jacob van Campen, who took control of the construction project in 1648, as the Town Hall for the City of Amsterdam, and was built on 13,659 wooden piles and cost 8,5 million gulden. Jacob van Campen was inspired by Roman administrative palaces. He drew inspiration from the public buildings of Rome. Yesterday it was a busy Sunday afternoon and this Dutch painter was painting our Royal Palace. Gerrit Adriaensz Berckheyde did paint it too way back in 1673. Not much has changed since then even the clouds look the same except maybe the horses were replaced by the bikes of today.

My own postcard of Amsterdam
Made by B℮n
Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands. The name is a derivative from Amstel dam pointing to the city's origin: a dam in the river Amstel. The city is known for its historic port, the Rijksmuseum, the red-light district (de Wallen), the liberal coffeeshops, and the canals which have led to Amsterdam being termed the Venice of the North. My photo of the Westertoren in Amsterdam is published on a postcard and available in many tourist shops in and around Amsterdam.

Reflections Of Amsterdam - Twins Separated At Birth
Made by AmsterS@m - The Wicked Reflectah
Unedited mobile phone shot of a guy going for a walk in the Westerpark in Amsterdam, reflected in a canal. No editing, no tricks, no Photoshop :) Thank God it's Friday!! Luckily I have mostly recovered from my Killer-cold/Ear-infection experience and I'm really looking forward to 2 days of rest and severe chilling out in La Casa AmsterS@m. I was so sick and tired in the last week that I didn't manage to snap a singel wicked reflection shot (or any other pics worth mentioning for that matter!) and I sure hope that I'll come across some puddles soon, or you'll have to look at the dusty contents of my wicked archive for weeks to come...actually you've been doing that already for days and days now, I hope you didn't notice lol ;-) Have a great day, enjoy your start of the weekend, I'll try to get seriously drunk tonight to kill off the remaining Killer-cold germs with some good Dutch beer :-P www.amstersam.com
