West Point Lighthouse
The West Point Light, also known as the Discovery Park Lighthouse, is a 23-foot-high lighthouse on Seattle, Washington's West Point which juts into Puget Sound and marks the northern extent of Elliott Bay. Opening on November 15, 1881, and featuring a fourth-order Fresnel lens, it was the first manned light station on Puget Sound and cost $25,000 to build (...)

West Point Lighthouse, Intruders 2
Made by cookinghamus
Kite Aerial Photography at the West Point Lighthouse in Discovery Park, Seattle, WA. April 19, 2011. This image was taken by a camera lofted by a kite. Washington has many lighthouses, some are easy to get to, some are not. This one is located on the far west point of the large Discover Park, inside the Seattle city limits. There are big signs that say that you're not supposed to drive to this lighthouse unless you're in an authorized vehicle, and so this evening, rather than risk a ticket, I hiked in a mile from the edge of the park to get to the lighthouse. This is the first time I've ever been to the lighthouse, despite having lived in Seattle for over 10 years. I was able to make it to the lighthouse shortly before the sun dipped below the horizon. While I was there, two people approached me, talked to me a bit about what I was doing, and then offered me a beer. I accepted, and it turned out they had already opened a bottle for me, so I drank it while KAPing. I thought this was pretty cool and gracious of them, but then they told me they were trying to break into the lighthouse. I didn't think they were seriously trying, but then many of my images from this angle clearly shows them trying to get in one of the windows. It's kind of crazy, and I'm not super wild about what they were trying to do, although I must admit, the beer was tasty. Wind conditions were a little windier than I would have preferred, but I was able to tune my Rok so that it didn't pull as hard in the heavier wind. It was high tide, so I was unable to reach the water side of the lighthouse, wind was from the Northeast. The wind was sufficiently strong that my camera rig was consistently being blown to the side, enough that nearly all of my images have a crooked horizon. Visible in this image is the weather station mast which prevented me from getting closer to the lighthouse. While I might just maybe have been able to make the string of the kite clear the top of the mast while I was walking on the edge of the water, the rocks there were large and would have been difficult to walk on. I made the judgment call that trying to concentrate on not getting wet, finding good rocks to walk on, and getting my kite past the mast was just too much to do all at the same time, and didn't attempt to move past it. I think I got some good images anyway. :) Wind conditions were a little windier than I would have preferred, but I was able to tune my Rok so that it didn't pull as hard in the heavier wind. Rocky Driftwood Lighthouse
Made by Surrealize
Highest position in Explore = #3 on March 16th, 2009. Also featured on both the Explore front page and the Interestingness page! THANK YOU all for the wonderful support! My last lighthouse shot got quite a bit of buzz so I decided to shoot another, this time, at Discovery Park in the Magnolia neighborhood of Seattle. I was on my way home from work one night last week and noticed that the cloud conditions were shaping up for what might be a really great sunset. I’d been wanting to shoot the lighthouse in Discovery Park for some time now, so I pulled the trigger. Having never been there, I had no idea where to park and since you can’t actually see the lighthouse from the road, picked the first spot I found. Lucky me, I don’t think it is actually possible to park any further away. But hey, the weather was great... Just had to lug my gear... Oh, and I had on my work dress shoes, which made for a fun walk... and sore feet! Oh the things we photogs sacrifice to get the shot. Well after about 40 minutes of walking, I reached the lighthouse and was blown away. Beautiful beach grass everywhere, tons of amazing driftwood, and the snow capped Olympic Mountains in the background. I played around with several different shots and ultimately decided on this angle as it had the best balance between sky, rocks, driftwood, lighthouse and the colorful reflection of the setting sun. Just as the sun was going down, a ton of birds began to fly overhead as if they knew it was photo time. One even had his “landing gear” down which I thought was cool. Perhaps they were expecting crumbs... doh, maybe next time! You'll have to view the to see which bird had the landing gear :)

West Point Lighthouse Sunset HDR
Made by Fresnatic (Slight Flickr break till Monday)
I met up with Aaron and his daughter Ella, at the West Point Lighthouse last Thursday for a sunset shoot. It was our first day in about a week that the sun finally had decided to come out and play so we wanted to take advantage of it! It was kind of cold and windy and Ella was a real trooper sticking with us as we shot the fading light! I wanted to shoot the Alki Point Lighthouse but the tide was at it's highest. I would have needed a wetsuit to swim to it! So I am still eying the tides for a return trip. Still the sunset was a nice change from the cloudy grayness that has typified this long winter...oh wait...it is now Spring! Here is a sunset...an epic sunset... from last year from the other side: www.flickr.com/photos/fresnatic/4953043333/ One of the things I really like about this shot is the subtle rays of light radiating from above the clouds! This is a combination of three exposures (-2,0,+2) merged and tonemapped in Photmatix. I then cropped in Photoshop CS5 and also did some desaturation of the blues in the rocks. I also puched the image through Topaz Adjust for a color bump and then also adjusted the contrast a bit. That bump also created a slight halo over the top of the lighthouse, but in this particular image I felt it was okay. Final adjustments in Lightroom and added vignette. I am getting closer to having my website done. Of course I am rushing as the Zenfolio tryout period ends tomorrow. So when I do have it up, I will still be adding images to it! Thank you for your views, comments, and faves! I appreciate all of the honest feedback and support. Please do not use my images on blogs or websites without my permission. Thank you.

A Colorful Discovery
Made by Aaron Eakin
A strange thing happened in Seattle last Thursday...a giant glowing orb appeared in the sky. I'm not sure what it was, but luckily it seems to have gone away again. Hopefully for good. I've heard that light and color can kill you. And besides, what would we do without all the gray? This is West Point Lighthouse, in Discovery Park. The weather was looking oddly good on Thursday, so Ella and I hiked through the park and ended up here to meet and shoot the sunset. I can't wait to see what he came up with...the light and color should have made for a great HDR, I think. The image here is a blend of two exposures, one for the lighthouse and foreground rocks, and one for the rest. Ella is really becoming my photo buddy! But this night I think she'd had enough of sitting on beaches for a while, and it was pretty cold, so she didn't last long before she was ready to go...right at about the peak of color. I wrapped her in my coat and tried my best to entertain her while shooting, but it came close to a break down this time. :) But I'm glad we made the journey, because it was a beautiful sunset (more photos to come). And I promised her a normal park with toys and no camera the next nice day. Just got back from my weekend getaway at Alderbrook Resort, and I'll be visiting you all this evening. Hope you all had a great weekend!

West Point Lighthouse HDR 2431
Made by Fresnatic (Slight Flickr break till Monday)
Highest Position in Explore #321 on June 27, 2009. Thank You! West Point Lighthouse marks the north end of Elliot Bay which leads into Seattle. I was at this location back in March when the sun was setting further south. This is when I met my Flickr friend Jason (surrealize). We were both shooting pictures, Jason with his nice DSLR and I with my Point and Click. He introduced me to HDR photography. When he posted his capture of the lighthouse, I was blown away and INSTANTLY outgrew my Point and Click camera! So now the sun is setting as far north on it's path through the sky, hence not as interesting a shot to the south. There were about 30 other photogs positioning themselves for the sunset which was spectacular. Supposedly even more spectacular, 20 minutes earlier, as I was informed by a fellow photog. I was happy to see that there will be major restoration being performed to the exterior and interior of this lighthouse. The exterior should be completed by November. Point No Point Lighthouse is a twin of this one and is located north of Kingston on the Kitsap peninsula.

West Point Lighthouse by Moonlight
Made by Fresnatic (Slight Flickr break till Monday)
Hey everyone, thought I would throw up one more moonlight image. I took this last Saturday at around 2:30am! Yes I was traipsing through Discovery Park, located at the north end of Elliot Bay while everyone was sleeping! There is something about moonlight photography that has me hooked right now. I am busy working through my Oregon images, so be patient on the morsels I post. Most everything will contain a lighthouse in it, as it is my passion. I am happy that they are pretty much done with the renovations to the West Point Lighthouse. For the longest time it had a big tent around it. Now I hope that they finish up the restoration of the Point Robinson Lighthouse located on Vashon Island in central Puget Sound. This is SOOC with an adjustment to the White Balance. I cropped in Photoshop CS5 and added slight vignette in Lightroom3.0. Thank you for your visits, views, comments and faves. I have been working through everyone's photostreams and have seen some outstanding and inspirational work. Have a great Friday!

What dreams may come
Made by Aaron Eakin
Here's one more of the West Point Lighthouse at Discovery Park, taken a little bit after the earlier one and on the other side. The color really picked up at this point, and this was probably at its height. Great little spot for a sunset....now that I know I can skip the 30 minute hike and just drive straight here, I think this will become one of my go-to spots for sunset. On a different note, I've finally put together a photo website for selling prints: www.aaroneakin.com You won't see anything that you haven't already seen on here, but any feedback you have would be greatly appreciated. And any money you have would be too. :) I'm not great at self-promotion (or photography, for that matter), so this venture will probably fail miserably, but I had to give it a shot.

Last light
Made by Aaron Eakin
A shot of the few remaining minutes of light at West Point lighthouse in Discovery Park. I've been meaning to get out here for a while, and it's not exactly far from where I live, so I headed out the other evening. I misjudged how long the hike would take and missed the main sunset by a few minutes, but it wasn't colorful anyway. But the last remnants of light made the sky behind the lighthouse look quite dramatic, so I felt it was worth the trip. Unfortunately, it really was the last of the light, and I had to hike back in the pitch black night. For bonus points, can anyone spot the ducky and the horse in this photo? The ducky is quite obvious, but the horse is much tougher. :)

West Point Lighthouse Sunset

The sun has started coming out again in Seattle. Instead of doing the all too common trip to 12th Ave Bridge I decided to head out to West Point Lighthouse in Discovery Park. It has recently been renovated and is really looking grreat. When shooting West Point Lighthouse you can either shoot from the south side of it or the north side of it. The south side gave a view looking more directly to the sun and with a better view of the mountains. However the south side also gave you a shot with no clouds in. So after trying my luck on the south side I walked around to the north and had a go from there. The results were much, much better, with the clouds giving real character to the shot.

Alki Point Lighthouse, Washington

#45. These next eight are from a sailing trip to the Pacific Northwest. This is on the shore of Puget Sound, not far from downtown Seattle. The lighthouse grounds were unexpectedly closed, but we walked down to the beach and around the fence. Some of the best shots came from shooting up at the lighthouse with the rocks and driftwood. For other photos and more information on this lighthouse, see its Set page.

West Point Lighthouse sits at the tip of Discovery Park in north Seattle. The lighthouse is nearly identical in design to the Point No Point Lighthouse in Hanville, Washington. This is a composite shot (I've been referred to as pre-HDR image editor.) I also did some whitening on the light; Deej6 commented that this photo has a painted effect - that's what I was hoping for. Thanks for taking a look at my photo. If you liked it, please browse through my Lighthouse set for some more shots of (mostly) Washington State lights. There's a link on the right >> -Stephen

BETTER LARGE Found this on my hard drive and thought I'd spend a little time on it. Shot this back in September of 2007. Discovery Park is one of my favorite places in Seattle. And even though I've shot this lighthouse several times, I always enjoy going back. Like most landscape shots, getting a really good image at this place is always weather dependent. 5D 17-40L Hitech GND (don't remember what stops but guessing I used at least 3) 2 exposures, manually blended

The Light of Seattle

I had forgotten I even had this picture until I went through these pictures again. This was probably my favorite of the lighthouse I took this trip but forgot about it when I focused on the processing of the star trail picture of this same lighthouse. This is West Point Lighthouse in Seattle again at Discovery Park. The long exposure seemed to work pretty well with the clouds and the ocean ISO 100 F/22 196 Seconds (over 3 minutes)

Please view large, it helps bring out the colors! Seattle's hidden lighthouse. About a 1.5 hour hike to get out and see this gorgeous sight. (Found out later that we could have driven the whole way there....never trust park rangers!)

West Point Lighthouse again at Discovery Park in Seattle. So I'm still not totally sold on HDR...still very much in the middle about it. I think i've decided it's all right to play around with a little, though It will continue to be only a small portion of what I post.
