West Cape Howe, West Cape Howe National Park, Western Australia. A sandy, dry, and rather desolate spot right on the south coast where the wind does not let up for an instant. It's really not that photogenic, but I walked all the way to the cliffs in the distance and back so damn if I'm not publishing a photo of it (which was taken on the walk out there). As usual, just a simple image does not convey the scope or scale of distance here. So, best viewed large.

The sun sets, and Richard begins climbing to Kylie to rescue themselves from the slippery rocks at The Mincer. This one, too, finished well after sunset, and involved frantically building a new trad anchor at the top. Richard took a whipper and jammed a #6 nut, which he rescued the next morning before bacon and eggs.

They rocked up after I walked out there, and I couldn't understand a word they said, at which point they all started to lie down with their heads poking over the edge of a very very long drop. Click.

The dark cliffs of West Cape Howe. These are a lot taller than they look in the shot, quite definitely not cliffs you want to fall off of, for if you survived the fall, the ocean would finish you off.

I edge out for a closer look as Scott builds his anchor 50m below me at the base of this three-star 19. The first ascent came 30 years ago by an old friend of Scott's.

Scott and I get cozy on a tiny ledge 30m above the roaring sea. With his gear-anchor set (so I'm not swept away by a king-wave), Scott starts the pitch.

Scott builds his anchor 50m below, and we rock another stellar three-star crack climb at sunset. We finished this one in the dark.

Watch your step! Tentacles can be as long as 10 metres and the sting is very painful.
