A guy named Thomas Stimson emigrated to California from New York by way of Michigan and Chicago. He was a lumberman, and a very prosperous one, it would seem. He had this Romanesque castle built in 1893. In its lifetime, it has changed ownership and purpose a couple times. First, of course, it housed Mr. Stimson's fmaily. Later, it served as a frathouse (USC is just down the street). The Dohenys and the other oil tycoons who lived in their very pleasant park-like Chester Place enclave, just behind the castle, took ownership of it sometime, I think, in the '40s, to quiet the neighborhood down a bit. The aforementioned enclave has since become the Doheny Campus of Mount St. Mary's College, generously bequeathed to the Los Angeles Archdiocese by the very pious Mrs. Doheny upon her death in the late '50s. I don't know whether the Castle is part of the property. Some say it is. Further research will solve the mystery. In any case, don't try to take pictures of the great architecture that still graces Chester Place. The security people don't like that. The Castle, however, fronts Figueroa Street, with its back to the snooty security guards. If ever I gain access beyond the gates into this place, I swear to you, I will go nuts. It is, without a doubt, the most unique building I've found in the greater Los Angeles area.

Episcopalian Cathedral detail

The Episcopalian cathedral on Adams between Flower and Figueroa, Los Angeles. The text beneath the rose window reads Passus est sub Pontio Pilato crucifixus mortuus et sepulius. At the ends are Anno Domini and MCMXXIV, meaning 1924 AD, probably the year of construction. Plenty of interesting angels and winged beasts.

right after i took this, a limo sped by with a woman hanging out of a window while flashing her breasts and yelling at a car driving alongside her. unfortunately, my reaction time wasn't quick enough to get a picture of that. ahwell..

And this is the church from a bit further away. It's a fascinating, if rather boxy, affair, and I plan to get some more detail shots of it in future. Although fairly new - 1924 - it's in a very old-fashioned style.

Built for the first African-American Presbyterian congregation in Los Angeles, the church was founded in 1904 and was the largest of its denomination in the West.
