Wenceslas Square (Czech: V�clavsk� n�mest�) is one of the main city squares and the centre of the business and cultural communities in the New Town of Prague, Czech Republic. It has been a place where many historical events occurred; it is also a traditional place for demonstrations, celebrations, and similar public gatherings. The square is named after Saint Wenceslas, the patron saint of Bohemia.

In my late teens I was much moved by the so-called Prague Spring and the liberalising attempts of that wonderful, gentle and brave leader, Alexander Dubcek. I sat in front of the television and cried my eyes out seeing the Russian tanks moving into Prague. I and many others watched in awe and horror as Jan Palach set fire to himself in Wenceslas Square and burned to death. His name was burned into my mind. When I visited Prague in the 90s I was determined to find some recognition of that young man. I found this small memorial in Wenceslas Square and knelt before it, moved beyond belief. I know there are now official memorial sites and statues to him, but this small offering, lovingly cared for, meant far more to me.
