Wells

Interesting places in Wells:
Wells Cathedral   The Blue School
The Market Place   Somerfield

Wells is a small cathedral city and civil parish in the Mendip district of Somerset, England, nestling in the Mendip Hills. The name Wells derives from the three wells dedicated to Saint Andrew, one in the market place and two within the grounds of the Bishop's Palace and cathedral.^ During the Middle Ages these Wells were thought to have curative powers ^

  • Wells Cathedral and its Grounds

Wells Cathedral is the only cathedral in England that still has a Vicars Close and Bishops Palace intact (so they claim). This makes it a must see and a will see, as it rises above the surrounding town and is visible for miles! The most distinctive thing about this cathedral is the Scissor Arches in the Transept. These modern-looking arches were actually built in the 1300's to stabilise the structure after a heightened tower was added, and they face North, South, and West.

  • Wells Museum is located opposite the cathedral. It portrays the history of the city.
  • Wells carnival takes place every year in November and it's full of illuminated floats. Don't miss it.

Ancient clock

Ancient clock

This clock, inside in the north transept, has been telling the time in Wells Cathedral (Somerset, England) since around 1390. The second oldest original working clock in the world, and the oldest with its original dials. (That and following information pp notice displayed with the clock.) It shows hours and minutes, and the number of days since a new moon. Above the dial, there is a group of figures which spins around on the quarter hour. As it spins, a knight is unhorsed by a lance. He is merely 600 years old. I presume the first one wore out! (My id Wells clock 1390 pde0159)

Christ on the cross and the scissor arches of Wells Cathedral. During the 14th century the central supports of the crossing (the junction of a Cathedral's four arms) were found to be sinking. In 1338 Bishop Ralph (stop sniggering at the back) of Salisbury decided to build internal scissor arches to support the weight. I don't know if he had any other bright ideas in his lifetime, but this must have been his best. Fast forward 670 years and Wells has a unique place among cathedrals in the UK. A shot of the 'famous' Scissor Arches at Wells Cathedral in Somerset. They really are something quite different, I believe this is the only (certainly the oldest) example of this design in any church - they are really characterful.
