NEVER FORGET, Eve of 9.11

NEVER FORGET, Eve of 9.11

September 11th Remembrance One: When we remember the stockbrokers, office workers, maintenance workers, bystanders, window-washers and all the others who worked together so valiantly to help each other, we can say together: All: We remember great courage. One: When we recall the firefighters who rushed upstairs as most everyone else was racing out, we can say together, All: We remember selfless service. One: When we recall the police officers who stood to protect and defend the people and performed their duties until the towers came crashing down on top of them, we can say together, All: We remember selfless sacrifice for the safety of others. One: When we recall the thousands of workers, women and men and, old and young, single and married, American-born and those born in countries around the world who did not escape the buildings, we can say together, All: We remember the loss of human life. One: When we recall those citizens who rushed to help, did all they could to help, we can say together, All: We remember and give thanks for dutiful commitment to those in distress. One: When we recall the people who stood in line at the nation's blood banks to make living donations from their very bodies, we can say together, All: We give thanks for those who live on to pass on life and love. One: When we remember the millions of Americans who gave so generously of their life and labor to endow funds to help the survivors and their families recover from their losses, we can say together, All: We are grateful for generosity. One: Remembrance begins with deep, personal identification. It begins with remembering the affliction of our brothers and sisters, and marking their pain as our own. Remembrance is when we raise up and hold to the light, the good of all who have passed. Strive to set a good example and make a better world. Support and comfort those who work for peace so warfare can only be a historic memory Have empathy for all the people of the earth Be strong in moments of remembrance and for those who mourn.

Wanaque Reservoir Drought 1981

Wanaque Reservoir Drought 1981. The drought of 1980/81 in the northeast was one of epic proportions. The largest reservoir in Northern NJ, the Wanaque Reservoir, dipped to it's lowest level in decades. At the same time, it revealed things not seen in a generation! Entire towns, roads, bridges, the railroad, building foundations, and more. On a very cold February 1981, I ventured out onto this moonscape to photograph things which have not been uncovered again since these photos were taken. Another bridge on the main road. This one was crossing what I believe was the Ringwood River. You can see the alignment of the road from the mounding in the ice. This bridge had no deck, the ice had formed it's own deck by settling down on the support beams as the water receded. I have seen this bridge again once in the past 29 years, but never to his extent, I only saw the tops of the sides.

When full, this bridge is under 30 to 40 feet or water. (it was so cold this day my Pentax camera was malfunctioning and the shutter was sticking, causing the black bar on the right)

This is an old stone lined well near one of the building foundations. I almost walked into this, and I most certainly would have fit and fallen to the bottom. To this day I get nightmares thinking about what would have happened if I had fallen into this out there in the middle of nowhere.

Perhaps just as interesting was what I found on the ground at numerous old building sites. Broken bottles, coal, broken plates, metal fragments. The other thing I found everywhere was clam shells from some kind of fresh water clam. The foot prints on the moon were mine.

I was unable to get to this as it was on the other side of the lake of what existing water still remained.

This section of the reservoir has remained flooded since I took this picture almost 30 year sago.

shortly after these photos were taken, Brixton took off down the boat ramp, not realizing that ice is not the same as solid ground. He broke through immediately, and swam out about 15 feet before finally turning around towards the shore. I was in the process of taking my jacket off thinking I would have to swim after him. He got out, and as I frantically tried to get him to return to the car, he dipped and dived and played with the biggest smile I think I have ever seen on his face. Little brat! scared the hell out of me.

Actually, this is going down from Governor Mountain. My spouse got me these grippy Micro-spikes last year, and this is my first time using them; finally! I can't tell if it's Suicide Ledge above me. The New Jersey Walk Book describes it as coming later in the hike, but here was the only spot I saw any views off of the mountain. This hike is in 50 Hikes in NJ.

Roman is from Russia and is here in the USA on an exchange program until mid-September. He is currently working as a Lifeguard and likes practicing his English... which is damn good! At first, I thought his eyes were blue, until I uploaded the photo... clearly they are green. For more about the 100 Strangers Project, go to: www.100strangers.com

It's sad when you see a business you know is going to fail, and it hasn't even opened yet. Spanky's Burgers & Dogs is a good example. A doomed location. Several food business prior to it that failed. Spanky's lasted about 6 months. It was always empty when I passed it, and you knew that couldn't last long.

Two months ago I posted a photo of a failed business in this building (Spanky's Burgers 'n Dogs) and indicated how several food businesses prior to it had also failed at this location. Well, here we go again. Another Deli, in a location that has failed three previous times. I wish Carmine luck. I do.
