Castellers ~ Fent pinya

Barcelona (Catalonia). I'm happy to share my view of this beautiful Catalan tradition. In a human tower, many people work together to build a living monument, to reach for the sky and even touch it... Last Thursday was a beautiful day and we saw some great castells in Barcelona. I hope you find these interesting. In case you've never heard of castellers (castle-builders) here's some info from Wikipedia: Castells (castles) are human towers built traditionally in Catalonia. The tradition of building human towers originated in Valls, near the city of Tarragona, towards the end of the 18th century. A castell is considered a success when stages of its assembling and disassembling can be done in complete succession. The final assemblement occurs when everyone has climbed into their designated places, where the enxaneta, the last person -often a child-, has climbed up to the top, and has raised one hand with four fingers erect, to symbolize the stripes of the Catalan flag. The enxaneta then climbs down to the other side of the castell, where every other person of the castell can then climb down in order from highest to lower parts of the castell to safety. [Adapted from Wikipedia] The pinya is the ground-level base for a castell, often composed of several hundred people.

A shot explanation in English: Corpus Christi is celebrated in Barcelona with 16th-century tradition L'ou com Balla, translated as dancing egg. Emptied eggshells are perched above the water jets of the city fountains, to give the illusion of them dancing in mid-air. The fountains themselves are decorated beautifully for the occasion, with fragrant flowers in rich reds and pretty pinks. Also look out for the parades of giants and big-headed carnival figures (known as cabezudos) that converge around the cathedral area in the centre of the city.

A Cathedral Interior

I'm back. Had to take a bit of a Flickr break for the holidays, and to recharge after almost thirty days straight of processing images from the Cote Vermeille portion of my trip last November. I think the creative juices are flowing again, so it's onto the processing of my photos from Barcelona. It will take me a while to catch up with everyone's photostreams, but I look forward to seeing what everyone's been up to for the last two weeks or so. Here's the first of my images from a three-day stay in Barcelona. The Cathedral of Santa Eulàlia (also called La Seu) is the Gothic cathedral seat of the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Barcelona, Catalonia (Though sometimes inaccurately so called, the famous Sagrada Família is not a cathedral). The cathedral was constructed throughout the 13th to 15th centuries on top of a former Visigothic church. The Gothic-like façade is from the 19th century. Another image from the interior of the Barcelona Cathedral -- showing the vaulting above the cathedral crypt. The cathedral is dedicated to Eulalia of Barcelona, co-patron saint of Barcelona, a young virgin who, according to Catholic tradition, suffered martyrdom during Roman times in Barcelona. One story is that she was exposed naked in the public square and a miraculous snow fall in mid spring covered her nudity. The enraged Romans put her into a barrel with knives stuck into it and rolled it down a street (according to tradition, the one now called 'Baixada de Santa Eulalia'). The body of Saint Eulalia is entombed in the cathedral's crypt. (Cribbed from Wikipedia) My entire Barcelona Travel Set is .

Església de Sant Just i Pastor

HDR CATALUNYA.

Please Thank you to everyone who commented on my previous upload (Put a little sunshine in my life). When I bought myself a Ricoh GRD III last year, I found that it took me right out of my comfort zone.. If you'd like to read more about my attempts to reinvent myself, please click here. BTW: the questions that Itzick, Artc , Rebels, Raul and Rick O'h asked in relation to my last upload, I plan to answer in a subsequent post :)

Famous walkway that bypasses Catedral (La Seu) in the Barri Gótic district in Barcelona. Waited for almost 2h that morning for really nice light that never came. Some shadow of the woman walking through the alley is noticable, but apparently at other times of the year, this alley really gets illuminated in the morning. Single RAW exposure. Level adjustments in Photoshop CS3. 12 May 2009: Moved to the Top of My Stream. I apologize for my absence the past month or so. I do still have a ton of photos to post from Japan and Redwood NP/San Fransisco, but I've been busy trying to finish graduate school and get a job. Yikes!

El Born is a trendy little area in Barcelona, filled with interesting restaurants and shops, and a beautiful light airiness. It was a pretty dramatic contrast to the neighboring Barri Gòtic, all mysterious and moody, where we had spent the afternoon. We had just finished dinner at Taller Tapas (Tapas Workshop), when we decided to have a seat on some shallow stairs to do some people watching. I was struck by the light and colors in the view . . . this woman serendipitously moved into the frame as I snapped the photo. She harmonized perfectly! Watercolor in my Barcelona moleskine.

At these festivals, several colles castelleres or teams often succeed in building and dismounting a tower's structure. In the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona, hidden among the narrow streets, is located one of my favorite places: San Felipe Neri Square. On the facade of the church can still be seen the signs of the shrapnel impacts due to one of several bombings that took place during the Spanish Civil War. On January 30, 1938 dropped a bomb that caused the collapse of the underground part of the Church of Sant Felip Neri, killing 42 civilians, including 20 children who took refuge here...

The Carrer del Bisbe is one of the oldest (and most photographed) roadways in the Barri Gotic (Gothic Quarter) of Barcelona. Running alongside the Cathedral and the site of the ancient city walls, buildings along the Place de la Seu end of the Carrer del Bisbe still incorporate parts of the old Roman walls. 2exp Handheld HDRI My entire Barcelona Travel Set is (Top Explore Position 2 -- April 3rd, 2008)
