9/11 at Turner Field
Made by Georgia National Guard
Then Col. Larry Dudney (right) carries the Braves line-up card out to the umpires at Atlanta’s Turner Field during the Braves’ game on Sept. 11, 2006. He is accompanied by the team’s former bench coach Fredi Gonzales, who has since replaced the now retired Bobby Cox as the Braves’ manager. Dudney, who had only just returned a few months earlier from his deployment to Iraq as deputy commander of Georgia’s 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, was given the honor of taking out the Brave’s line-up card on this day because he, himself, is a survivor of the 9/11 terrorist attack on the Pentagon, where he was working at the time. Now a brigadier general, Dudney went on to command Combined Task Force Phoenix IX in Afhanistan and was director of the Afghan National Security Forces Development Assistance Bureau in Kabul from 2009 to 2010. Currently, he is director of the Georgia Department of Defense Joint Staff.
