“I am not old, I am just 90 years old.” said Juozas when I met him in Pilies street in Vilnius. “I am all alone at home and still need to take care of my 12 ares of my land and the garden”. I met Juozas when he was selling his wooden spoons and pallets. He told me that he does it out of the trees that he has in his garden. “At first I had 30 trees but now just 12 left. I use it to do my carvings, but look at the beautiful things I have done.” Juozas finished his engineering studies in 1951 and then worked in the foreign soviet destinations for a long time. He was the supervisor in big developments in Samara. Though he remembers these days with a smile on his face. That day I passed Juozas couple of times afterwards. Even in the late afternoon he was still sitting and selling his handcrafts. “I sold ten of them already!” he shouted from afar. I thanked him once again and waved goodbye. As with the buildings, some postcard views of streets taken in the old town of Vilnius - some were taken on a Sunday morning so there were very few people about. The final three images are of streets that look quite and peaceful now but were part of the infamous Vinius Ghetto during WW2, one can only imagine the horrors that took place here – the Jewish population was reduced from 40,000 to almost zero.
