Bocca della Verita'

Bocca della Verita'

Rome La Bocca della Verità (in English, the Mouth of Truth) is an image, carved from Pavonazzetto marble, of a man-like face, located in the portico of the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin in Rome, Italy. The sculpture is thought to be part of a 1st century ancient Roman fountain, or perhaps a manhole cover, portraying one of several possible pagan gods. The most famous characteristic of the Mouth, however, is its role as a lie detector. Starting from the Middle Ages, it was believed that if one told a lie with one's hand in the mouth of the sculpture, it would be bitten off. The piece was placed in the portico of the Santa Maria in Cosmedin in the 17th century. This church is also home to the supposed relics of the saint, St Valentine. The Mouth of Truth is known to English-speaking audiences mostly from its appearance in the 1953 film Roman Holiday. The film also uses the Mouth of Truth as a storytelling device since both Hepburn's and Peck's characters are not initially truthful with each other. This scene from Roman Holiday was parodied in the 2000 Japanese film Sleeping Bride by Hideo Nakata. It was also replicated in the film Only You starring Robert Downey Jr. and Marisa Tomei. The Mouth of Truth also has an appearance in Hugo Award-winning short novel Nightwings by Robert Silverberg. It also appears in the game Animal Crossing for GameCube by Nintendo. Chiesa di Sant'Anselmo all'Aventino

Chiesa di Sant'Anselmo all'Aventino
Made by celllfish
Rome The chiesa di Sant’Anselmo all’Aventino is a church in Rome. It is in the Cavalieri di Malta square, in the rione Ripa. It is a Badia Primiziale of the order of Saint Benedict. The church is more modern than it looks: it was built by Francesco Vespignani between 1892 and 1896, on a land given by the Knights of Malta to the Benedictines, who made it their central church in Rome, together with the monastery and the theological university. The church shows a neo-romanic style, Vespignani built it according to the project of the Belgium Benedictine abbot Ildebrando of Hemptime. The church is made of three naves, divided by granite columns. The ceiling is a truss and the apse is covered by a mosaic. The crypt is made of 5 naves. the church is built on the ruins of an ancient Roman domus of the 2nd-3rd century A.D., still preserved under the church. From this domus comes a mosaic showing the myth of Orpheus, now in the monastery. Nowadays the church is mainly known to the local Roman people because of the performance of Gregorian singers during the Sunday mass. Next to the church there are the Pontificio Ateneo Sant'Anselmo and the Pontificio Istituto Liturgico. (from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

Peeping at St. Peter's

Peeping at St. Peter's
Made by Scott Kasper Photography
Believe it or not, this is real! Aside from minor adjustments in highlights and shadows, no other doctoring was done to this photograph. It is best viewed Large. At the top of Aventino Hill in Rome is Piazza Cavalieri di Malta, the monastary of the Knights of Malta. It that is surrounded by a high wall and solid gates, and not possible to enter. However, if you peep through the gate's key hole (thus the blurred edges), the topiary garden in the yard is such that you get this tunnelled view of St. Peter's Cathedral at the Vatican. The line of peepers behind me were getting inpatient, but I had to get a good image! It was very cool, yet somewhat ironic to be peeping at the Pope's place! If you have time, please enjoy the entire set from my recent trip to Italy:

An Piazza dei Cavalieri di Malta liegt die Villa del Priorato di Malta, die nur mit Sondergenehmigung zugänglich ist. Hier ist das Tor des Eingangsgebäude zu sehen mit dem berühmteste Schlüsselloch. Wenn man durch das Schlüsselloch blickt, schaut man in den Garten, dessen Hecken so beschnitten sind, dass sie einen schnurgeraden den Blick auf die Kuppel der Peterskirche freigeben.
