Vila Nova de Gaia

It is located in the Porto district, south of the city of Porto on the other side of the river Douro. The city has a population of 300,868 (2006) and contains 24 parishes, being the most populated municipality in Norte region. Gaia together with Porto and other 12 municipalities makes up the commonly designated Porto Metropolitan Area.

Ribeira in Porto, Portugal. One the right side by the river are a lot of touristy restaurants. Just behind the Swedish consulate up a narrow alley are two more typical restaurants with mostly good food. The historic centre of Porto is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The photo is taken from Vila Nova de Gaia where actually all the portwine houses have their storage house (caves). So technically maybe one should call portwine Gaia wine?
