First of all, I advice to view in original size to get the details:) A landscape version of the same motive as last. I have to say I am really happy with these photos, and I think that they really captures the feeling of Hong Kong - a city always on the move, forward looking and open. Its by far the most efficient city ive been to, and despite its size, its surprisingly clean, which I also feel is represented in this image - its busy, its big but its clean and structured. The process of making this image involves several stages. Firstly, I went to Central where the picture is taken (actually between Central and Sheung Wan) at night right after rush hour. Yeah, normally as a photographer I tend to avoid this moment but for this image it was crucial. The picture comprises 9 exposures whereas I made 3 exposures for three different focus points. The reason for doing so is i) to increase details in highlights and shadows, ii) to increase sharpness and DOF since to small apertures results in diffraction. Hence, I used f/7.1 which is optimal for the EF 10-22 lens. The shutter speed range is from 12 seconds to 71 seconds. Although I believe that the picture is created when you press the shutter, I also think that you have to process it in order to exploit the true potential of the image files. Hence, I spend a great portion of my time processing my images in the digital darkroom. I use both lightroom and photoshop. For this image I have used Lightroom to import the images and adjust whitebalance and reduce saturation before using Photoshop to merge the 9 exposures together. Thus, I do all merging manually by using layers and masks, because I feel that this method enhances control and quality compared to some automatic program. After merging the 9 exposures I convert the image to LAB color mode where I increase contrast(in the L channel) and saturation(here I only increased saturation in the A channel to increase that nice warm tone of the image). At last I sharpen in LAB (the L channel which is good because it doesn't affect color noise). I then save, import the image to Ligthroom again where I did some final adjustments (some local dodging and added split toning for increased blue in the sky). Cheers:)

My photo has been published at 1x.com:):) Please have a look here! As I am finished with my last photo project labelled Ghost City I continue to explore alternative ways of capturing Hong Kong. Although light trails such as these are not very original they make up a good effect for any night shot. This photo is combined by totally nine exposures. I used the EF 10-22mm which is a decent lens, but used at too small apertures it will show a great deal of diffraction. Also, at too large apertures its not sharp enough i think. Therefore I have used f/7.1 and focused at three different places in the scene - each focusing having three independent exposures to get details in both shadows and highlights. Post production is done in Photoshop and lightroom. I first import everything in lightroom, and apply the same settings to all nine frames(basically just adjust white balance and reduce saturation). I then import all 9 frames to photoshop and combine them as planned. This is quite cumbersome to do manually but i prefer to do so over some automatic program. The third step is to convert the image into LAB color mode which I find superior in every way over Adobe RGB or sRGB. Here i apply contrast, saturation and a little sharpness Then save and go back to lightroom:) The final step is done in lightroom. The reason for this is simply because i find lightroom so much more handy to work in. Here I apply color filter, vignetting and some final dodging. If i dont like my settings or want to change them marginally i can do so easily in lightroom. Total processing time: around one hour. I advice everybody to view the picture in the largest version to get a good view of the details. Please leave a comment if you have some suggestions or feedback of any kind:) Cheers:)

Another one for the night set. Heritage 1881. 3 image (flat) stitch plus quite a bit of blending work. High res: . The whole compound used to be occupied by the Marine Police. The compound is a declared monument since 1994 as it is one of the four oldest surviving government buildings in Hong Kong. The Compound and the Old Kowloon Fire Station have been re-developed into a heritage hotel with food and beverage outlets and retail facilities in a project headed by architect Daniel Lin. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Former_Marine_Police_Headquarters_C... Hong Kong is an interesting place. Most people would agree that Hong Kong has shops in abundance while culture and heritage are in short supply. So what do you do when you have a heritage building. You attach a high end mall to it. Sign of Hong Kong as a shopaddictive city. -There are probably more Rolex signs in Hong Kong alone than in the rest of the world. - If you want to go to your office you have to go through a mall. - The subway (MTR) system sometimes feels as a mall designed as a subway system. - When the mainland Chinese visit during their holidays there are ques in front of the Louis Voutton stores (there are 8 stores). - If you want to visit Macau you have to go through a Ferry terminal which ofcourse is a shopping mall. - In the subway you feel ashamed to use your outaded 3Gs Iphone.

Junks were developed during the Han Dynasty (206 BC–220 AD) and were used as ocean-going vessels as early as the 2nd century AD. They evolved in the later dynasties, and were built and used throughout Asia for extensive ocean voyages. They were found, and in lesser numbers are still found, throughout South-East Asia and India, but primarily in China, perhaps today most famously in Hong Kong. Also, found more broadly, is a growing number of modern recreational junk-rigged sailboats. This particular shot is of the Aqua Luna....a tourist boat patterned after the traditional Chinese junk boats. I found this one in an old film holder, and just recently developed it. I shot it in Hong Kong during March 2009. It is the view of my room in a Chungking Mansion Hostel in the last building on the left on the 16th floor. It was a single room for 20€ a night - very good value for Hong Kong. The composition has not been chosen with intent, but was dictated by the small window which I had to unscrew to open it fully. Not having a tripod head didn't help either. But I totally love the chaos and the organic feel. I would be happy if I could make these kind of images for the rest of my life. Just don't know if anybody would ever buy this, except from myself. I uploaded this one a little bigger, at 25MPix - take your time and explore it a bit. Just check out the lovely rooftop garden - like a paradise island amidst the eternal chaos. --- become a fan

I'm back from my vacation in Asia! This time, I went to Thailand, Hong Kong and Japan. In Hong Kong, I met up with some flickrites for dinner and photowalk. Thanks again to the people that came out and for the delicious Singaporean food! This was taken on the HK walk on the Avenue of Stars in Tsim Sha Tsui. We just happened to get over there when the laser show was going on and thus that aura of light behind the oscar statue. Lots of fun that night! I have now officially moved from the west coast to the east coast. So cold here! We drove to Rhode Island to visit a friend and it was so cold that I didn't even feel like taking pictures. Now that's a first. ;p Lots of catching up to do. Miss you guys! Please do not use my pictures without my permission.

I was supposed to continue uploading the Switzerland pictures, but having seen many of my Hong Kong flickr friends uploading some Hong Kong landscape shots over the past couple of days, I have to stick a few in. The sky in Hong Kong for the past couple of days is nothing short of breathtaking. Views are clear in daytime and at night. These pictures are straight out of camera with only black borders added. Other than that, there is no post processing. Why need post processing when the view is already that gorgeous? | My Facebook Page

Ok, this is an iconic shot of Hong Kong, seen many times. But anyway, I had to do it myself. And it was not easy to shift the 150mm to get the top of IFC I - since the footbridge is so close. I had to put the bank at a 30° angle and at maximum shift, must at least have been 12cm - way too much for the stated image circle, but obviously Schneider must be very conservative with it's numbers, because I had no dark corners. I made two exposures, one with maximum shift up and one with maximum shift down of the rear standard - these are 9cm on a Sinar p2. Was a charm stitching these two.

One of my more Dramatic photos... This HDR could have turned out much better had I taken more than 3 exposures, but unfortunately I was shooting handheld and my camera only does 3 exposure bracketing, so it wasn't really possible. I would have liked to get some color in the sun.....but I suppose this effect works as well. Canon EOS 550D (Digital Rebel T2i) Canon EF 24mm F:2.8 prime lens (I think....) This is the clock tower of the old Kowloon Canton Railway (KCR) in Tsim Sha Tsui. Taken on the HK Walk on December 2nd. I finally downloaded Lightroom 3 Beta - thanks to for the link! I played around with it yesterday and can already tell there's so much more precision and options. You can even link it to flickr and publish your photo from LR3. Thanks for all the support in 2009! I definitely cherish all of your friendship~ Happy New Years! Happy 2010! Please do not use my pictures without my permission.

Please mom, can I have the Frappachino instead?!? -- This photo was taken in a HK Starbucks that my wife and I had gone to in order to take a break from the crazy crowds in the streets and to feed our daughter. Our daughter is sooo curious and she loves looking at people so much that feeding her was a challenge because she was constantly distracted. Isn't she precious? Today it was the most beautiful day (weather-wise) I have ever seen in Hong Kong. There were no clouds in the sky and the wind blew away the polluted air. I took the advantage of the weather and went out to take yet another shot at the Hong Kong city. The Hong Kong skyline is truly magnificent. These couple photos are very sharp, do try to take a peek at the originals. Beautiful Hong Kong

This is a picture framing stall at the junction of Hollywood Road and Peel Street. Hollywood Road is famous for its many art galleries. A large portrait of Marilyn Monroe is on display across the road at the Sundaram Tagore Gallery and interestingly, by the time I finished sketching the stall in the forefront, looked back at the gallery, Marilyn Monroe was gone already. My sketcher friend asked did I made it up since she didn't notice there was a portrait.

Sony DSC-T33 + JPEG + CS What is a sense of belonging? That was the topic being discussed on air I had once listened to. How about collective memories, does that really take a well educated person to understand, to possess? Is it too philosophical of a subject to spend time pondering on? Is it something that everyone can feel, but may not even be aware of it? Whatever, just something I thought of while I was reading thru some books last night.
