Armadillidium is a genus of the small terrestrial crustacean known as the woodlouse. Armadillidium are also commonly known as pill woodlice, pill bugs or roly-poly, and are often confused with pill millipedes such as Glomeris marginata. They are characterised by their ability to roll into a ball when disturbed. They typically feed on moss, algae, bark and other decaying organic matter. They are usually found in moist areas such as decomposing leaf matter and soil. Armadillidium vulgare is the most abundant species in Europe and has been introduced worldwide. The colouration especially of young A. klugii resembles the red hourglass marking of the Mediterranean black widow Latrodectus tredecimguttatus. This is probably a kind of mimicry, to ward off predators that mistake the harmless animal for a venomous spider. Unlike other arthropods such as insects and spiders, pill bugs do not have a waxy cuticle that would reduce evaporation from their bodies. Pill bugs also use modified lungs, called pseudotrachea, for respiration, and the lungs must remain moist to function. Individual pill bugs typically live for two or three years, and females brood eggs once or twice each summer. Several hundred eggs are brooded at a time in the marsupium, a pocket on the ventral side of the female pill bug. The marsupium must also be kept filled with water until the young hatch and crawl away.

View On Black HAKKINDA Abdülmecid’in annesi Bezmialem Valide Sultan tarafından yapımına başlanmış, Bezmialem Valide’nin bitirmeye ömrü vefa etmeyince oğlu tarafından bitirilen Dolmabahçe Camii; Dolmabahçe Sarayı’nın güney cephesinde, sahil şeridindedir.

Seagulls @ The Bosphorus

Seagulls @ The Bosphorus
Made by Murad Al Ramadan
Gulls (often informally called seagulls) are birds in the family Laridae. They are most closely related to the terns (family Sternidae) and only distantly related to auks, skimmers, and more distantly to the waders. Until recently, most gulls were placed in the genus Larus, but this arrangement is now known to be polyphyletic, leading to the resurrection of several genera. Gulls are typically medium to large birds, usually grey or white, often with black markings on the head or wings. They typically have harsh wailing or squawking calls, stout, longish bills, and webbed feet. Gull species range in size from the Little Gull, at 120 g (4.2 oz) and 29 cm (11.5 inches), to the Great Black-backed Gull, at 1.75 kg (3.8 lbs) and 76 cm (30 inches). I took this photo in Istanbul, Turkey on the Bosphorus. A slightly sunny day after a couple of rainy cold days I got this picture which I like so much.

The Dolmabahçe Palace in Istanbul, Turkey, located at the European side of the Bosporus, served as the main administrative center of the Ottoman Empire from 1856 to 1922, apart from a twenty-year interval (1889-1909) in which the Yıldız Palace was used. The Dolmabahçe Palace was ordered by the Empire's 31st Sultan, Abdülmecid I, and built between the years 1843 and 1856. Hacı Said Ağa was responsible for the construction works, while the project was realised by architects Garabet Balyan, his son Nigoğayos Balyan, and Evanis Kalfa. The construction works cost five million Ottoman mecidiye gold coins, the equivalent of 35 tonnes of gold. Fourteen tonnes of gold in the form of gold leaf were used to gild the ceilings of the 45,000 square metre monoblock palace, which stands on an area of 110,000 m². ~ Wikipedia

The palace was constructed in the lush Kazancıoğlu Gardens by architect Serkis Balyan in 1871, as appointed by Sultan Abdülaziz who stayed there until March of 1876 when he made Dolmabahçe Palace his new residence. Material including rare marble and mother of pearl were imported from different parts of the world for the construction of the palace. The construction of the Çırağan Palace, which began in 1863, was completed in 1871 and 2.5 million gold coins were spent. In January 1910, a fire destroyed the entire inside of the Palace, including significant antiques and art pieces of Abdülhamid and books from the renowned library of Murat the Vth. Works by Rembrandt and Ayvazovsky were included in the priceless collection.

Akaretler Row Houses were constructed in the second half of the 19th century, by the order of Sultan Abdulaziz, for the accommodation of the workers of Dolmabahce Palace. This set of residences is one of the best examples of the civil architecture of 1870's with their neoclassical front design, lacking the influence of earlier Baroque and Rococo styles. The no-court plan applied in these houses reflects the effect of the nineteenth century western architecture to Turkish construction. Total construction area on the region formed by the Spor and Sair Nedim Streets is 30,000 m2. The existing houses are mostly three floors high and are stepped parallel to the slope of the terrain.

View On Black | Right2Roam Blog Istanbul's Blue Mosque is easily one of the most impressive structures I've had the pleasure to visit. No single shot can really capture the full scale of this inspiring, spiritual place. Hopefully you agree that this shot gives an idea of the ingenuity, craftsmanship, and artistic genius of the people who constructed it.

The cistern, located in the historical peninsula of Istanbul, was built by the Greeks during the reign of emperor Justinianus in the 6th century, the age of glory of Eastern Rome, also called the Byzantine Empire. The cistern is surrounded by a firebrick wall with a thickness of 4 meters and coated with a special mortar for insulation against water. The cistern's water was provided from the Belgrade Woods—which lie 19km north of the city—via aqueducts built by the emperor Justinianus (c) Wikipedia

One of the 'sea' gates of Dolmabahce Palace and its guard. The palace was built in the mid 1800's by the Balyan architects and was the administrative heart of the Ottoman Empire after they stopped using Topkapı Palace. Once the Republic was established (1923) Atatürk used it as his Istanbul headquarters and it is where he died in November 1938. Today it is open as a museum. Istanbul is a city on multiple hills - with rather deep valleys between them. This is a convenient crossing from the Hilton and Hyatt hotels to the Swissotel and trendy Macka area.. Accepts tramway and underground jetons (tokens); Very popular vehicle among university students from the Technical University, two parts of which are situated on these opposite hills... A few more glimpses of Istanbul

The previous unedited shot of a cafe window apparently didn't excite many viewers, so I followed a suggestion from a respected contact to crop it tighter and try to present it ina more 'abstract' way. Some levels and curves tweaking to make it lighter and more 'translucent' - but still as naturlal as it gets.

Continuing the abstractization (did I just invent a word?) of the previous shot - to extremes, but trying to keep it still recognizable. The previous vivid image was treated for a ripple effect with all the transparency, reflection and refraction artefacts for a near-realistic water surface impression.
