O2 Arena

Former Millenium Dome. The development took place in the form of new buildings being built inside the dome structure. The dome structure was not changed as part of the construction with the exception of blue lights being added to the support poles and plasma displays being added to some of the large sculptures around the dome. Construction started with the arena roof, which was built on the ground and then raised, as cranes could not be used in the dome structure. The construction then moved on to the arena building itself and the entertainment avenue around the arena building. A wide pathway between North Greenwich station and The O2 was also built, as well as the Peninsula Square piazza in front of the dome for special events. A glass roof was built over part of the pathway so that people can walk from the station to The O2 without getting wet in rain. A covered path was also built between the QE2 Pier and The O2's main entrance. Buro Happold provided structural engineering for the project. The main civil engineering and construction contract for the development was awarded to Sir Robert McAlpine. Watson Steel Structures provided engineering for the 4500 tonne arena roof. M-E Engineers were the building services engineers for the project. T. Clarke were the electrical contractors. Keller Ground engineering prepared the ground for construction. Special ground preparation was necessary due to the contaminated soils from the industrial works which existed at the site before the dome. Catalytic converters were also installed within the dome to prevent toxic gases due to the dome structure being left in place. The plant cylinders, containing services equipment, and some piles used for the original dome, were reused. Financial consulting was provided by WT Partnership and EC Harris.

Back where I belong now, was it just a dream?

Back where I belong now, was it just a dream?

I'm back from London where I saw the Spice Girls live twice. I've been a massive fan for half of my life, I've supported their solo careers as well and been secretly hoping for a reunion, so I'd get a chance to finally see those five amazing girls live. Finally on January 2nd and 3rd, my dream came true. The concerts were awesome, I had such a good time singing and dancing along, hearing all those fantastic pop songs live. I feel a little sad now that it's all over, but so happy that it happened. Thank you girls!

Millennium dome map

This is a map of the insides of the Millennium dome, as it stood in 2000. Interestingly, the dome closed at the end of 2000 which is a shame, since the new millennium didn't start till 2001. The dome cost £650 million of public money to build and cost a furthur £650 million of public money to run (Ticket prices of £20 per person didn't keep it afloat as the dome was a poor attracter or tourists). I didn't go here myself, but my sister gave me this map. Enjoy!

Brace yourself for what could be the mother (so far) of all branded club nights. Not only have Smirnoff invited punters to get involved in making the night happen (wanna hear some MJ on the decks? Just let 'em know!) but they've got Hot Chip DJs and Tom Middleton spinning the electronic razzle-dazzle around live sets from Little Boots and Pet Shop Boys, and cabaret from Wau Wau Sisters. Wham!

Depeche Mode at the 02. 27 years on. Always a great live act whether you're stood down at the front (as we were in Birmingham, 10 feet from the stage) or here in the Upper Tier at the back at the O2. A different, still amazing view from 'the back' looking down on 20,000 fans (we call ourselves Devotees after the infamous 'Songs of Faith and Devotion' tour) singing and waving along.

Tonight marks, for Mick Hucknall & Simply Red, the end of a 25 year career at the top of their game. I saw the penultimate concert at the 02 arena in London last night, after battling through blizzards, abandonment of the car in snow, and the wrath of British public transport in severe weather, and, all I can say is.....it was well worth it!!! SOOC.

Live at the O2. Absolutely fantastic show from what has to be one of the biggest bands in the world at the moment. And yes, that is Simon Pegg in the middle.

The talk zone was sponsored by BT, although I doubt they'd write Talk Talk over anything these days.

As this wasn't an artefact I took a sneaky photo with the phone. Titanic Artefact Exhibition.

I saw this plate in the exhibition and I though it was so lovely I stole it.
