Something very interesting occurred recently, a contact of mine (new one) blogged my shot on Tumblr. What was incredible is that apparently my image exploded through Tumblr and has, as of a few hours ago, generated 8,950 notes, a combination of people liking the image and re-blogging it. I have no idea how many times it has been viewed, here is a link to it on Sam's Blog, samposner.tumblr.com/post/3185621990, while there, check out the rest of his blog, it is a great one. :-) I am pretty amazed at the activity the photo generated. Anyway the thing that is interesting is that it also generated a lot of views on flickr as people clicked on and, if also a flickr user, faved or commented on the photo via flickr. However, what is absolutely perplexing to me is that while all of this activity was going on my image kept dropping in terms of the ranking within explore. At this point the post has gotten 2,760 views, 184 comments and has been faved 243 times. Much of this occurring in the last 4 days of last week, on Friday alone it got 739 views, 26 faves and 5 comments. Many of those views came from Tumblr, and I suspect a lot from people who are not flickr users as well. TunnelBlur now sits at number 176 in the explore rankings for Feb 4th, it started out in 11th place. The image that is now in 11th place (a good one in my opinion) now has a total of 1,366 views, 46 comments and 83 faves. But forget that one, I am fairly certain my image had dramatically more activity than any other photo that was ranked higher than 30, especially over the last 4 days of last week, and yet it dropped each day through the rankings even though it was generating not only more activity but against some other images that were not generating any activity. So I am thankful I have explored recently (although my run seems over), but the above is perplexing, I mean how is it possible? Not complaining, but if explore is supposed to be about interesting images, how in the world is the type of activity that my photo generated cause for it to drop in interesting rankings as opposed to rise? Again not complaining, I am actually really happy that the image has gotten some play, Explore was one of the reasons it did, but it seems a riddle to me, so I thought I would share. HSS!!!!! Thanks for putting up with the above if you read it!

My shadows about to get a good cleaning :) I was recently Tagged by my good friend , and he has a twist on the game, which is to guess which one of the following statements about me is NOT true? 1. I have run the LA marathon twice. 2. I have watched as two oceans collide. 3. I have jumped out of a plane. 4. I have swam with dolphins. 5. I have been a crown bearer to a queen. 6. I have sailed down the Nile. 7. I have panned for gold. 8. I have served a Member of Parliament a beer. I will post the answer here tonight, have a great day friends... oh, I need to tag people... if you'd like to play consider yourself tagged! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Thanks everyone for playing :) ~ so for the answers... 1.True: 2005, 2006 very slowly :) 2.True: In South Africa ~ Indian and Atlantic oceans collide, makes for some turbulent waters. 3.True: Couple of years back with my buddy who was celebrating his 40th, I would wake up for several nights after dreaming of that opening in the plane, my feet trying to cling on to the floor :) but it was fun really ;) 4.NOT True!: I really want to though! [Congratulations Frecklenose! She had the only correct answer at the time the answers were posted :)] 5.True: Little tricky like some of you said. One of those British (yearly) traditional Rose Queen festivals. I was her crown bearer as a 5 or 6 years old, dressed up in some b/w outfit with sparkling buckles on my shoes and sitting on the float, with her crown on a pillow, as we were driven down the street. :) 6.True: Had a three day layover in Cairo in '91, during which I got to explore a little... 7.True: Up in Northern California around a preserved Gold Rush village (museum). 8.True: As a teenager I worked in a Golf Club in my home town, in the clubhouse. One day for a tournament Willie Whitelaw was a guest player, and came up for some refreshments. He served under Margaret Thatcher as her Leader of the house of Lords, as well as many other Parliamentary positions in his long career.

Venice Beach - California

Venice Beach - California
Made by herobyday
Today was the day of the 2nd annual scott kelby photowalk. I could not believe how many people showed up for this. I have been to venice beach before but for the life of me i just couldn't figure out how to get there. my gps guided me toward santa monica and i had to roam the streets trying to find my way. the place was a madhouse and i feared i would never find parking. I finally found a street that looked like it was where i needed to go and turned down it. i found available parking at the tune of 25 dollars. tired of driving around and fearing i would never find parking i just paid the outrageous fee. I never seen anyplace so packed in my life. it was a good time though even though it involved a ton of walking and blazing heat. Edit: thanks to my last comment i learned she is somewhat famous. hm i had no idea. She's also a model named amor hilton

Press L to see his nose hair................or maybe not :-p From Wikipedia: Venice is a district on the Westside of Los Angeles, California, United States. It is known for its canals, beaches and circus-like Ocean Front Walk, that features performers, fortune-tellers and vendors.[2] Throughout the summer months, the boardwalk is actively entertaining, and this tradition continues on weekends in the winter.[3] It is an important tourist attraction in Southern California,[4] and has retained its popularity in part because it is an attractive location for walking and bicycling.[3] It was home to some of Los Angeles' early beat poets and artists and has served as important cultural center of the city. In the quiet silent seconds I turned off the light switch And I came down to meet you in the half light the moon left While a cluster of night jars sang some songs out of tune A mantle of bright light shone down from a room Come down in time I still hear her say So clear in my ear like it was today Come down in time was the message she gave Come down in time and I'll meet you half way Well I don't know if I should have heard her as yet But a true love like hers is a hard love to get And I've walked most all the way and I ain't heard her call And I'm getting to thinking if she's coming at all There are women and women and some hold you tight While some leave you counting the stars in the night Come Down in Time, by Elton John and Bernie Taupin

This is the first in what I hope will become a series of urban photos showcasing some of the places that truly make Southern California what it is. This first image was shot on the Venice Boardwalk, at Venice Beach. For those not familiar, it is a place where all walks of life come together as one; from the many street vendors and street performers to the young and not so young, to the countless tourists and even the homeless, they all are truly represented on the Venice Boardwalk! | www.RobertSternPhotography.com | | Facebook |

recently processed film. kiev 60, zeiss-flektogon 50mm, f/8 @ 1/125. efke R100. i've been a dedicated HC-110 user for many years, and have always been pleased with the resolving power and snappy negs it produces. decided to give rodinal stand development a try, to see what the acclaimed edge-effect looked like. processed in rodinal 1:100 @ 20C, agitated for the first 2min, stand for 60min. unfortunately, i ended up with the streaking i've read about - insufficient agitation. next test will be semi-stand, still at 1:100 for 60min but will have occasional agitation for the first 10min and a gentle shake at 30min.

A&I los angeles now offers processing of bulk-rolled 35mm motion picture stock (ECN-2) process. at $15/roll, it's an expensive but welcome service that replaces Hollywood's RGB Color Lab, which closed in 2005. more A&I news: I have learned this week that A&I and Photo Impact have merged, effective Sept.1. Photo Impact has been my lab of choice for over ten years - time marches on I suppose. Fewer and fewer pro labs left, even here in LA. nikon N90s 28-105mm. kodak eastman vision 2 5218 500T motion picture stock, shot @ 1/50 w/ 85B filter. processed ECN-2. lab: A&I, santa monica, ca.

Over the Can

Over the Can
Made by Brian Auer
Taken on Kodak Portra 400VC film with a Diana+ Skater at the Venice Beach skate park. I'm so stoked that I caught this one! This guy was one of the better skaters out there. He had moved the trash can in front of the ledge, and I knew what he was planning. His first try he ended up hitting it a bit, but this was his second try. I had placed myself directly on the side of it and waited for him to leap over it. When I hit the shutter, I knew that I had captured him directly over the can. That's one great thing about the Diana+ -- no shutter lag.

[Taken in front of the The Phoenix House . Venice Beach, CA] Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes. Don't want to be a richer man I still don't know what I was waiting for And my time was running wild A million dead-end streets Every time I thought I'd got it made It seemed the taste was not so sweet So I turned myself to face me But I've never caught a glimpse Of how the others must see the faker I'm much too fast to take that test Bowie

Dogtown pools

Dogtown pools
Made by walkermoon2
Venice Beach is known as Dogtown and it's where skateboarding originated. Today riders are much more technical and skilled than the fathers of sidewalk surfing but it's still all about style.... Venice Beach is one of only a handful of cities that still maintain FREE skate pools. And these aren't the dumbed down versions that most insurance companies demand. These pools are deep and fast, some sporting full 10 foot transitions. If you're ever in the area, stop and watch the talent, it's impressive.

"Und sie dreht sich doch!" - Nikolaus Kopernikus
Made by Thomas Hartmann
In 1543 Nikolaus Kopernikus published De revolutionibus orbium coelestium in six volumes. He claimed, that all planets, including Earth, rotate around the sun. The books were banned by the Vatican until 1835. This is a historic shot from Muscle Beach in Venice, CA. The swing set was removed, maybe because of safety concerns? It was a great setup for wild action shots, sometimes creating the illusion that the world is revolving around us. Explorer #81, thank you for looking. P1000325.jpg

Venice, California - 2005 UltraChrome Print I found this partially disintegrated sand sculpture late one afternoon while wandering about Venice Beach (one of my favorite photo spots to bum around). It's only a few feet from the advancing tide of the Pacific Ocean. Bonus: Some people swear that the clouds in the sky behind the sand head spell out LOVE. I'll leave it to you to decide what may or may not be there (this shot is completely unretouched).

Venice Beach homeless man

Venice Beach homeless man
Made by beedubz
I got this a few years ago with a Coolpix 5700. This guy was fascinating to meet. He would come to the beach every morning and stack rocks in 3 to 4 foot piles. Very methodical. Each night, kids would come to the beach to party and knock them all down. The next morning, without fail, this guy would show up and start all over again. He is kind of like the Sisyphus of Venice Beach.

Venice Beach, California I ran into this guy while walking to the drum circle. I asked him if I could take his picture and said yeah man, just another one of my paparazzi. He said he's famous all over the world and I just thought he was full of it. When he reached the drum circle, the place went nuts...apparently he's very well known for his beating.
