Famous bodybuilder spot in Venice, Los Angeles, California, USA. After the closing of the original Muscle Beach in Santa Monica, bodybuilding attention shifted south to the somewhat lesser-known Venice Beach Weight Pen, operated by the Los Angeles Recreation and Parks Department. A small, spartan weight pen was built near Windward in 1952, later replaced by the large current facility during a complete renovation and Muscle Beach Venice redevelopment effort in 1990, which sports a huge concrete barbell on the roof and bleachers for spectators. Today it is an open playground with a gated area that encloses weight lifting equipment, the second area is a sand box with gymnastic, rope climbing, and acrobatic bars. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Danny Trejo and Crips Co-founder Stanley Tookie Williams used to be regulars, among many famous bodybuilders and actors who have trained there. In fiction, Hulk Hogan appeared training there in an episode of TV show Baywatch.

He rolls around on his funky skates playing his electric guitar. This time around I gave him a couple of bucks and he put on a little show right in front of me.

It was fun to process because it was flat and boring. On our trip through California and around, we stopped for a couple of days in LA. Los Angeles, of course, you'll think. But frankly, it's a bit of a disappointment, compared to its sisters San Diego and San Francisco. Little lightpoint in the darkness: plenty of photo opportunities in Venice Beach, where this little kiddo was embarrassing many grown-ups with his skating talents.

Canon 30D + Tamron 14mm f/2.8 Rectilinear I shot this when I was new to photography and didn't understand infinite focus and that I should have focused on the basketball. Oh well. Lesson learned. The Tamron 14mm Rectilinear, by the way, is a GREAT lens.
