Citroen HY Icecream van

The Citroën H Van, Type H, H-Type or HY was a light truck (or delivery van) produced by the French car maker Citroën between 1947 and 1981. It was developed as a simple front wheel driven van after World War II. A total of 473,289 were produced in 34 years in factories in France and Belgium. Most of them were sold in France, Belgium and The Netherlands. The engine, gear box and many smaller parts are well known from other Citroën models: Engine and gearbox are nearly the same as in the Traction Avant and later the DS, only mounted with the engine to front. Head lights and speedometer were identical to the 2CV for a long time. The distinctive corrugated or 'rippled' swaged body work was inspired by German Junkers (Aircraft) of the 1930s, (the three engined Junkers Ju 52, being the last to use this construction), the ribs added strength without adding weight, and needed only simple, low cost press tools. Perfect for a cash strapped post-war Citroen. The flat body panels were braced on their reverse side by 'top hat' box sections, at right angles to the ribs. A small workshop, organised by a friend of mine, held at a local flea market. The objective of the workshop was to make portraits of people over there, preferably after getting their approval. By the end of the day, I was quite exhausted. Just because of the getting-up-to-unknown-people-and-asking-someting-of-them cost me quite a bit of energy, still being a relatively shy guy... This gentleman was the first one I approached and he was quite pleseant to speak with actually. He was really interested in why and what I like to photograph, and was talking lively about his own classic-furniture-restoration-hobby/venture. With all this talking, I was afraid he would try and pose for me while I just wanted to photograph him the way he was, reading his newspaper. But fortunately... Allright then, do you want me to do anything? No Great! Then I'll just go back to reading my newspaper


The Flea Market, II

The same workshop as my previous picture, but this one shot a bit more quick-and-dirty. This lovely old gal was talking lively with her neighbour, and I hoped to get a picture of that. But instead, when I asked her if it was ok to shoot a picture (Sure you can kiddo!), she just looked at me and waited for me to finish. Not what I had in mind, but maybe even better! Toned down the colors a bit to give it a sort of shabby, worn-out look.
