Varanasi is referred to as Kashi ("the luminous"), an allusion perhaps to the city's age-old reputation as a center of learning. It is also referred to as "city of temples", "holy city of India", "religious capital of India", "center of learning", and "cultural capital of India".

New Vishvanath Temple at BHU

Varanasi is not a city with distinct tourist destinations as such: instead, the experience is in watching the spectacle of life and death on the river and meandering through the alleys of the old city.

  • New Vishwanath Temple - also known as the Golden Temple, security is tight making entrance difficult and sometimes completely off limits to foreigners. No bags, cellphones or pens are allowed. They can be deposited in the shops side by the temple entrance.
  • Nepali Hindu Temple - A small golden temple, built in Nepali architecture, near Lalit Ghat
  • Alamagir Mosque - overlooking Panchganga Ghat, it's a great place for a bird's eye view of the area.
  • Man Mandir Observatory
  • Tulsi Manas Temple
  • Durga Temple
  • Banaras Hindu University - a very green and peaceful campus

Ghats

A is a series of steps leading down to the river, used by bathers and pilgrims, and riverside Varanasi consists of a long sequence of ghats. It's generally possible to walk directly between them, though near Manikarnika Ghat you'll have to navigate your way up and around through the alleyways. The best option for viewing the ghats is to charter a boat and see them from the river.

Hindus consider it auspicious to die in Varanasi, so some ghats are known as burning ghats, where bodies are cremated (in full view) before their ashes are placed in the Ganges.

Some of the main ghats, from north to south:

  • Panchganga Ghat - the meeting of the five rivers
  • Manikarnika Ghat - the main cremation ghat; a must-see, but remain quiet and never take photographs
  • Dasaswamedh Ghat - the main ghat and site of the large evening ; only reachable by foot at some times of day, about a 5 minute walk south from Godaulia
  • Rana Ghat
  • Kedar Ghat - brightly painted in stripes and busy with bathers, very photogenic
  • Harishchandra Ghat - cremation place.
  • Hanuman Ghat
  • Shivala Ghat
  • Tulsi Ghat - site of the large water purification plant
  • Assi Ghat - a popular place to stay with many hotels, restaurants and internet cafes

The Past Recaptured

“In Search of Lost Time” The Past Recaptured - Le Temps retrouvé I took this picture one evening as I was sitting on the stairs of Desaswamedh Ghat. This man kept my attention as he was trying to find something in the waters of river Ganga. I remember that he was there for a long time as the sun was going done. Those pictures of the oldest living city in the world are maybe an answer to my “Search of Lost Time”. Like the french writer Marcel Proust with his monumental work, “Search of Lost Time”(in French, “À la recherche du temps perdu”, also titled “Remembrance of Things Past” in its initial English translation), the role of memory is central. Memory is the link which leads a picture to another but I should say involuntary memory, as Benaras is acting on me like the episode of the madeleine in Proust’s novel. When I walk in the City of Lights, I am transported back to an earlier time by sensory experiences of memory, triggered by smells, sights, sounds, or touch. I believe this is what happens to most of the visitors who come over here and this is why this place is so special, so unique, this is the reason why whoever we are, whatever our culutre can be, we all find something which might be connected to the begining of History and which is deeply in our soul...

Arghya - Varanasi

Arghya - Varanasi

He took a handful of water, raised it above towards the rising Sun and released it as an offering. Arghya is a sanscrit word meaning wich is valuable and deserve to be offered. Here is suryarghya, offering to the sun, all for you my friends.. Seasons come and go. Cultures rise and fall. Values change. Standards change. We seek truth that is permanent, unconditionnal. Each and everyone is unique, but we all seek answers. Ajaad puri is a sadhu from childhood. I've posted a photo of him, taken in february 2006, in the temple just above the place he is bathing here, in Manikarnika. I didn't know him at that time… What a surprise when I discovered I had him in my files ! We are now good friends, he is such a beautiful person… You'll see him more than once on my stream. I wish you find the answers wich lead your life ahead.

“The oldest living city in the world”. I shot this picture at Scindia ghat in Varanasi (Benaras) during the time at which the sun is 6 degrees below the horizon in the evening. At this time called “civil dusk”, objects are distinguishable and some stars and planets are visible to the naked eye. Along the holy waters of the Ganges time then stops, images come and flow from reality to the collective unconscious and collective memories that we all carry in the deepest parts of our souls. The oldest living city in the world becomes a medium where anyone can share a sense of heritage and commonality with many human beings we have never met and where it is possible to transcend ones existence...

Tranquility

Ramnagar, just across the river Ganga, has plenty of silk weavers. Most of the silk comes from South, mainly Bangalore. The weavers create the base, which runs into 24 to 26 meters. There are around 5600 thread wires with 45-inch width.Titghtening the warp for sari needs a lot of space. In Ramnagar, they most of the time come here, near the Maharadjah palace. I can watch them from my window. The Maharadjah is still leaving there, you can view his picture here
