Büyük Valide Han İn the 17th century the mother of Sultan Murat IV, Kosem Valide Sultan ordered to built the Büyük Valide Han. The biggest and oldest han of Istanbul has 366 rooms. The Valide Han was the trade centre of the Iranian who have established themselves there previoly. Earlier the Iranian owned the stores there, but currently not as much as they used to. An Armenian, in 1567, has opened the first Armenian print office there. The Iranian continued this habbit. The religious state officers could not decide whether the Koran should be printed or not, the Iranian however began to print the koran illegally. Later one started also to print popular books illegally. When the publishers mentioned the text “without a stamp the books are fake”, the printing offices in the Valide Han did the same. The Han is still continuing its mission. The Han has 3 courtyards what is uncommon in the hans of istanbul. The mass of winding streets between the Grand Bazaar and the Golden Horn contains many old Ottoman commercial buildings. The most important of these was the Valide Han, which was used to store goods coming off the ships anchored in the Golden Horn, and as hotels for passing merchants. The Valide Han was built by the Valide, literally the Sultan's mother, Kösem Sultan, who as regent to two sons and a grandson legally ruled the Ottoman empire for a generation until her death in 1651 in a coup led by her daughter-in-law. It's still a working building, with porters coming and going with giant weights on their backs, but visitors are welcome to have a look around. Opposite the Valide Han are two more 18th-century hans, the Büyük Yeni Han and Küçük Yeni Han, and the Kürkçü from the 1470s. www.fodors.com/world/europe/turkey/istanbul/review-458943... DSCN3396

Upstairs on the second tier of the Büyük Valide Han are workshops hidden behind doors such as this in pitch black corridors. The scope of the building is wonderful, but it takes a little imagination to see it as would have been in Ottoman times! View on fluidr
