The base of gun turret no. 3 can be seen from the USS Arizona Memorial. The cement landing to the right was built after the sinking. The memorial flagstaff at the USS Arizona Memorial is attached to the mast leg of the USS Arizona wreck. The USS Arizona was stricken from the Naval Vessel Register in December of 1942. On March 7, 1950, the Arizona was symbolically re-commissioned when this flagpole was erected. The USS Arizona is treated as one of the current fleet and the flag flying on the ship's mast only flies at half-staff when the other ships fly their flags at half-staff. The marks the resting place of 1,102 of the 1,177 sailors killed on the USS Arizona during the Attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 by Japanese imperial forces and commemorates the events of that day. The memorial, dedicated on May 30, 1962, and visited by more than one million people annually, is only accessible via U.S. Navy boat boarded from the USS Arizona Memorial Visitor Center, which offers historical information about the attack as well as general visitor services. The memorial was designed by architect Alfred Preis, who had been detained at Sand Island at the start of the war as an enemy of the country because of his Austrian birth. The 184-foot-long floating memorial spans the mid-portion of the sunken battleship. It has two peaks at each end, connected by a sag in the center--representing the height of American pride before the war, the depth the nation fell to after the attack, and then the ultimate victory. The central room features seven large open windows on either wall and ceiling, to commemorate the day of the attack. The total number of windows is 21, which, although not confirmed by the architect, some believe represents a 21-gun salute. An opening in the center of the floor overlooks the sunken decks of the Arizona. A shrine at the far end consists of a marble wall that bears the names of all entombed on the USS Arizona. Sometimes referred to as black tears of the Arizona, oil can still be spotted seeping from the wreckage. The surprise military strike on Pearl Harbor by the Imperial Japanese Navy, designed by admiral Isoroku Yamamamoto, was a culmination of a decade of deteriorating relationships. The pre-emptive measure intended to prevent the U.S. Pacific Fleet from interfering in Japan's grand strategy of conquest in the Western Pacific. Instead, it provoked the previously isolationist United States into full participation in World War II. The base was attacked in two waves by 353 Japanese aircraft, launched from six aircraft carriers. Four U.S. Navy battleships were sunk, and another four were damaged. The Japanese also sank or damaged three cruisers, three destroyers, an anti-aircraft training ship, one minelayer, and 188 U.S. aircraft. In total, 2,402 personnel were killed and 1,282 were wounded. Japanese loses were light with 29 aircraft and five midget submarines lost, and 65 servicemen killed or wounded. The World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument, a United States national monument spanning 9 sites in 3 states, honors several aspects of the American engagement in World War II. Six of the sites are located in Hawaii--the USS Arizona Memorial and Visitors Center, the USS Utah Memorial, the USS Oklahoma Memorial, Six Chief Petty Officer Bungalows on Ford Island, and the Mooring Quays F6, F7, and F8, which formed part of Battleship Row. The monument was created on December 5, 2008, through an executive order issued by President George W. Bush under the authority of the Antiquities Act of 1906. Hawaii 2007 -- USS Arizona Oil Slick

Hawaii 2007 -- USS Arizona Oil Slick

The USS Arizona held approximately 1.5 million gallons (5.7 million liters) of “Bunker-C” oil. The ship burned for 2½ days leaving an unspecified amount of oil onboard. Oil has been observed leaking from the ship since the 1940s, however little action was taken until environmental concerns were expressed. Since 1998, the National Park Service Submerged Resources Center (SRC) and the USS Arizona Memorial have been conducting research directed at understanding the nature and rate of natural processes affecting deterioration of the USS Arizona, as well as monitoring hull conditions and oil release rates. Oil release observed during the 1980s Arizona documentation project originated from a hatch on the starboard (right) side of the barbette number three, and later from a hatch on the starboard side of barbette number four. Consequently, when oil release monitoring began in 1998, those hatches were a primary focus. During fieldwork from 1998 to the present, gradually increasing amounts of oil have been observed releasing from forward of the memorial; however comprehensive measurement of oil release forward of the memorial in the upper deck galley was not completed until June 2006. Measured release rates have gradually increased each year in direct proportion to the number of locations monitored: in 1998, 1.0 quart (0.95 liters) was measured from one location; in 2003, 2.1 quarts (2.0 liters) were measured from two locations; in 2004, 2.3 quarts (2.2 liters) were measured from two locations; in 2006, 9.5 quarts (9.0 liters) were measured from eight locations. The 2006 oil release measurements are the most comprehensive completed to date – increase in oil release over previous years is in part explained by more release locations being successfully measured then previously. Although observed rates of oil coming to the surface has gradually increased over the past several years, there is no indication of increase in amount of oil released from the primary oil containment spaces in the ship’s lower decks. The increase in oil release rates vary considerably with differing wind, tide, and harbor conditions. Although the exact amount cannot be determined, the USS Arizona contains an estimated 500,000 gallons (liters) of Bunker-C fuel within its hull.

USS Arizona (BB-39) was a Pennsylvania-class battleship of the United States Navy. The vessel was the first to be named Arizona. This was done specifically in honor the 48th state's admission into the union, which had happened just the year before the battleship was authorized by Congress. She was commissioned in 1916 and served stateside during World War I. Arizona is best known for her cataclysmic and dramatic sinking, with the loss of 1,177 lives, during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941, the event that brought about US involvement in World War II. The wreck was not salvaged, and continues to lie at the floor of the harbor. It is the site of a memorial to those who perished on that day. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Arizona_(BB-39)

The Arizona Memorial was designed by Alfred Preis and dedicated in 1962. Its concave shape symbolizes America's initial defeat and ultimate victory in World War II. You enter the memorial through a small darkened entryway that then opens up into open structure. At the opposite end is the room where all of the names of those that died are marked. Two Tree of Life windows watch over the wall. The USS Arizona is the sunken battleship that holds the remains of the 1,177 crewmen who lost their lives on December 7, 1941. It is an official Department of Defense cemetery. The Arizona Memorial is on the National Register #66000944, while the wreck of the USS Arizona is on the National Register #89001083 and also a National Historic Landmark.

Happy Flag Day! Back in February I was on my first visit to Hawaii and stopped by the Arizona Memorial. The wind was blowing and something was broken with the pole causing the ropes to slap against the pole over and over. The rythmic slaping seemed a sublte reminder about the cadence of life. Thanks everyone peaked on Explore #155 for June 14th 2009 then dropped Nikon D90 | VR18-200G | 34mm | f/11 | 1/500 sec | ISO 200

The final resting place for 1,102 (75 were recovered) crewmen of the U.S.S. Arizona who lost their lives on December 7, 1941. A 184 foot-long memorial structure spans its mid-portion. There are three sections in the memorial: The entry and assembly room, the central or middle area used for observations of the sunken ship and for ceremonies. The third section is the shrine room. The room contains the names of all those killed on the Arizona engraved on a marble wall. The memorial's architect was Alfred Preis. The memorial was dedicated in 1962. The USS Arizona is no longer in commission.

Servicemembers who were assigned to the Arizona at any time during its service history are permitted to have their ashes scattered in the waters above the memorial. Servicemembers who were actually aboard the Arizona on December 7, 1941, and survived the attack, are permitted to have their ashes entombed within the remains of the ship itself.. The USS Arizona is no longer a commissioned ship but it is an official Military Cemetery. The USS Arizona is on the National Register and a National Historic Landmark.

"Black Tears" of the Arizona

Another environmental concern here is the oil that seeps from the sunken ship. The Arizona had 1.4 million gallons of fuel on board when she went down, and perhaps half a million gallons remain. About a quart and a half a day bubbles up from below. Pearl Harbor survivors call the seepage “black tears.” It’s eerie to see and, in a strange way, a seemingly tangible connection to those who lie below.

This is one of the gun turret mounts of the USS Arizona. The turrets were stripped off and given to the Army by the Navy to use in defence of the Island. The guns were eventually mounted to the side of a hill to shoot into the ocean. They were eventually scrapped. This was also one of the first morring sights for boats salvaging the ship. You can see the cleats that were welded to the base of the turret.

Arizona tunnel

This is a tunnel that leads down into the ship. This ladder hasn't been used since the ship was sunk. You can see that the tower that sat here was cut off. There are cables and wires that ran the length of the tunnel. Everything was cut off when parts of the ship was salvaged. If you haven't ever to been to Pearl Harbor, go. The Arizona memorial is amazingly powerful.

Plaque listing the names of the officers and men lost aboard the USS Arizona on December 7, 1941. My great uncle served on the USS Arizona. He transferred off three months before Pearl Harbor to receive training to become a psychiatric nurse- he served on landing ships and cared for men who had become traumatized by combat and survived the war.

The design of the memorial contains much symbolism: The roof of the memorial with its ends curving upward represents initial defeat and ultimate victory. The seven windows on the sides and roof add up to 21, representing a perpetual 21-gun salute, The carving that appears on the right side of the memorial is the tree of life.
