Site of Children's House

Site of Children's House
Made by pokoroto
From the signboard: Local folklore says that during the Edo era when Christians were persecuted in Japan some residents of Fudoyama district in what is now Saga prefecture took their children to a house here and burned them. This spot is known as koyashiki meaning Children's house. Until the middle of the Meiji Era residents gathered here on November 25 on the old calender to hold a feast and prayed by repeating either moshisama or moishisama. The tombstone is called Moishizuka which is believed to have been derived from a corruption of the Portuguese moco meaning child. November 25 on the old calender is December 25 on today;s calender.

He greeted me as I was walking past his house and invited me in for a cup of coffee. He was an interesting character. He builds handcrafted custom campers in Toyota High Ace vans. He is the only one in Japan doing it so he has customers from across the country. I asked him why he was working on a Sunday and he said that it wasn't work, it was his hobby and he was lucky enough to make a living from his hobby. If you are interested it costs 2 million yen for the conversion and it looks like a mini motor home inside. Walking along the old Nagasaki Kaido. Sonogi-shuku

Japanese Niagra

It is called Todoroki falls and reminded me of Niagra falls. I did not know this was here so was happy to find it. The nice lady in the tourist office that I ducked into to get out of the rain gave me some nice maps which showed these falls so I took a little detour to have a look. Nagasaki Kaido Gate

Nagasaki Kaido Gate
Made by pokoroto
There is a gate across the old Nagasaki kaido. There is a little sign on the gate but I forgot to read it and went through. I didn't read it just in case it was a no trespassing sign but I think it probably just asks people to keep the gate closed to guard against wild boar. Walking along the old Nagasaki Kaido.
