WilliamsSonoma

I picked up a great many items from Williams Sonoma that were supposed to be “store samples” - as there were more samples than the store could ever offer, the manager made a generous donation to the Soup Kitchen at Christ Church in Belleville NJ. (Soup Kitchen is a misnomer, for all the time I have been volunteering there I have not once seen us serve soup). Instead, real food is served of which I have written many times. The store in Upper Montclair has made donations in the past of all sorts of things that have made Thanksgiving, as well as the meals served in the weeks before and after Thanksgiving, so much better than they would be without those donations. It is indeed a blessing to have access! Perhaps I am just embracing my inner Episcopalian a bit more in recent months, but the idea of using our time, talent, and treasure to do the work that we are all called to do is becoming more evident in my life in so many ways. I know that the people who donated these gifts have often said that they would like to donate time but often cannot. (if they were Episcopalians they might realize that their talent, that is, thinking of others and finding use for resources available, probably will affect the lives of more people than if they spent 3 hours at the soup kitchen). It is indeed a blessing to have such people, and such an incredible company, in my life! If for no other reason this holiday season than the support shown to the Soup Kitchen for which I volunteer, I highly suggest paying a visit to Williams Sonoma!

Upper Montclair Center, Montclair, NJ
Made by smaginnis11565
This is the downtown area for Upper Montclair, a section of Montclair, New Jersey, along Valley Road. This is a popular shopping area, with its own movie theater and a Williams-Sonoma. A NJ Transit railway station is also a block away. Upper Montclair has its own identity, accentuated by the Tudor style of these storefronts and the vibrant neighborhoods nearby. Yet, it is still unmistakably part of Montclair. Upper Montclair and the Short Hills section of Millburn are the only two unincorproated communities in suburban Essex County that thrive as if they were separate municipalities, as they each have a strong identity. Upper Montclair and Short Hills residents have their mail addressed to those place names, and they have their own ZIPcodes. In other Essex County suburbs, local place names mean less. The northern part of East Orange is called Doddtown, but not too many people refer to it as such. Ditto Tory Corner, West Orange's central district, although the neighborhoods of Pleasantdale and St. Cloud still have a bit of individual identity. Downtown West Caldwell used to be called Franklin when it was a village, but no one calls it that now!

Life Is Good?

Life is good? Really? Not so much for the ex-proprietors of this permanently closed store on Valley Road in the business district of Montclair, New Jersey's Upper Montclair section. The storefront is now for rent. Good luck finding a tenant in this economy. Even upscale places like Upper Montclair - one of those communities stereotyped as a place populated by Volvo-driving latte sippers - aren't immune to a very bad recession.

Signs Of Life At Five Guys Upper Montclair NJ
Made by johnleesandiego
After being taunted for months (years?) with an array of Coming Soon signs, the Five Guys burgers location on Valley Road in Upper Montclair is showing signs of life! Lights are on, people who appear more foodie than construction have been spotted in the building, and the windows are clean! (but that ever so polite KEEP OUT sign remains) Hmmmm.
