Cathedral of Learning, 1927 Gothic tower, University of Pittsburgh. Former chancellor John Gabbert Bowman envisioned a building that would inspire young men to remove their hats upon entering its doors. Wealthy benefactors thought he was crazy and agreed to just give him the money to purchase a scrappy lot to add to the university's holdings. Nickles and dimes poured in to fund construction from immigrant families who were the backbone of the city after they learned that the building would have rooms to pay tribute to their cultures. Today, the building is world famous for its Nationality Rooms.
