Kodak Bum 1970

Kodak Bum 1970
Made by samfeinstein
This gentleman was a fixture on the 3400 block of Walnut Street in Philadelphia in the late 1960's and early 1970's. It seems he was attracted there by the combination of a State Store and college students who were easy marks for panhandling. Since he was often in front of my apartment building, it got to the point that he didn't ask me for spare change any more and we just had conversation instead. It turns out that he knew my hometown, but his point of reference was the local railroad terminal as he was truly a man of the rails. In those days, he was called a hobo or a bum. Today he would be classified in the much less glorious catergory of homeless. He told us that he was once employed by Eastman Kodak in Rochester, NY, so he became known to us as the Kodak Bum. If you want to see why NOT to display a photo without putting it behind glass, view this in the original size. You'll see plenty of scratches that I didn't clone out, because it would have caused too much loss of detail. This is an Epson Stylus Photo RX620 scanner image of a print made from the original slide about 35 years ago. The original photo was taken with an Asahi Pentax Spotmatic - 50 mm f/1.4 lens. This lens (or most similar by other manufacturers) gave beautiful control over depth of field. GALLERY NOTES: This gentleman was a fixture on the 3400 block of Walnut Street in Philadelphia in the late 1960's and early 1970's. It seems he was attracted there by the combination of a liquor store and college students who were easy marks for panhandling. He told us that he used to work for Eastman Kodak, so we dubbed him the “Kodak Bum.” Oddly enough, he knew Bridgeton well, but his point of orientation was the old railroad terminal on Cohansey Street as as he always rode the rails, as he put it. 583

stranger #58 (update)

stranger #58 (update)
Made by plexi_glass
I have run again into a few of my strangers before, mostly because I used to live in a small college town. But nothing like this. This goes beyond chance. I first spotted a few months ago while I was walking around Paris. It was a very brief encounter, but her bold style and great looks made an impression. I remember I approached her with some terrible line in French only to find out she was American, which made things much easier. I was in Philadelphia this weekend visiting some old college friends. It was Monday morning and they both had to work, so I was left wandering around the city for the entire day. My friend suggested I walked around the Penn campus to hunt for some cool faces. And then I saw Lauren again. I couldn't believe it. I quickly walked past her to check again: same eyebrow piercing, same fangs on her ears. Seriously?!?!?!? I had to stop her, and I had to ask for another picture to make sure I didn't just imagine this. Lauren is a student at Penn, majoring in Historic Preservation. She was with a friend and on her way to class; I was so impressed about the whole situation that I couldn't think of much to say, but at least I made sure I got her e-mail address this time. What are the odds??? I don't live in any of these (fairly large) cities and we happened to run into each other on different continents, right when I happened to be out looking for stranger shots. Lauren, so nice to see you again. Next time we meet in, say, Southeast Asia, I'll keep taking pics of you, okay? www.100strangers.com

Brass Standing Figure of a 1000-Armed Avalokitesvara with 11 Heads

Brass Standing Figure of a 1000-Armed Avalokitesvara with 11 Heads
Made by Itinerant Wanderer
Brass Standing Figure of a 1000-Armed Avalokitesvara with 11 Heads. Tibet, 18th Century. Avalokitesvara, the bodhisattva of compassion, is also the patron saint of Tibet. The Dalai Lama is believed to be not only a reincarnation of his predecessor, but Avalokitesvara as well. The hands of this figure are held in namaskara mudra which symbolizes prayer. To give them life and power, prayers and charms were placed and sealed within Tibetan sculpture before their consecration. Ka-Figure of Khenu

Ka-Figure of Khenu
Made by Itinerant Wanderer
Ka-Figure of Khenu. Saqqara (in Lower Egypt). 5th Dynasty, circa 2450 B.C. Like most Egyptian statues, this one is not a true portrait, but the act of inscribing Khenu's name on the base was regarded as sufficient to establish his identity. The striding attitude corresponds to the idea of the ka of Khenu entering the tomb-chapel - and hence the world of the living - through the false door included in the tomb's structure, as a link to the afterworld. Quadrangle, University of Pennsylvania

Quadrangle, University of Pennsylvania

Penn has been building a vigorous on-campus community since the first dormitory was designed in 1763. Now, more than two centuries later, the College Houses at Penn are eleven unique undergraduate residences — hubs of intellectual, social, and recreational activity. They stand at the center of the Penn undergraduate experience, bringing together undergraduates, faculty, staff and graduate students to form shared communities within the larger context of Penn's vibrant campus. Constructed in 1895 by the architectural firm of Cope & Stewardson, the 'Quad' is considered to be a fine example of the Collegiate Gothic style. Photo by Scott Spitzer

The Anne & Jerome Fisher Fine Arts Library, also known as the Furness Library, is located on the east side of College Green. Designed by the acclaimed Philadelphia architect Frank Furness (1839-1912), the red sandstone, brick and terra cotta Venetian Gothic giant -- part fortress and part cathedral -- was built to be the primary library of the University, and to house its archeological collection. The cornerstone was laid in October 1888, construction was completed in 1890, and the building was dedicated in February 1891. In My Tribe

In My Tribe
Made by soupatraveler
White Dog Cafe...it's been years since I was last here, but tonight, I had dinner at the restaurant with a member of my tribe. We haven't seen each other since last fall and our drive up to NYC, so its been a while. Dessert was divine, conversation even better; we could have gone on for hours, but she had to catch the train North. At least this visit was less than a year since . The time before it'd been two. Sometimes, I'm such a lucky lady to have found so many special friends from all around the world. {165/365}

Empty boots

Empty boots
Made by duhe
Photo #21 in project 365 There is a huge rusty train bridge right near Drexel. Lots of trash underneath as usual. I found a pair of worn but still perfectly good boots standing neatly right in a middle of a garbage pile. I don't know why, but boots without legs in them look so lonely for me. Like their owner took them for a walk, got to the place and just abandoned, probably walking away in brand new shoes. So sad.

Photo #20 in project 365 Obama has some smart people working for him. His team does a tremendous job in Philadelphia. Well, at least on Upenn campus. I didn't see any Hillary moves yet, but Barack is all over the place: stands, window panels, stickers and whatnot. This sticker is an eye-catcher. So simple, yet so bright and effective. How do they come up with this stuff?

The life-sized, bronze Ben on the Bench that sits at 37th Street and Locust Walk was sculpted by George Lundeen. Commissioned by the Class of 1962, the statue was presented as part of the class's 25th Reunion Gift to the University and unveiled in September of 1987. Over the years, visiting dignitaries have taken a moment to pose with Ben. Photo by Scott Spitzer
