Visitors to the University of Havana are greeted by Alma Mater Nourishing Mother. First called Real y Pontificia Universidad de San Gerónimo de la Habana or Royal and Pontifical San Geronimo of Havana University, the University of Havana (UH) or Universidad de La Habana was authorized by Pope Innocent XIII and King Philip V of Spain in 1728 as a religious institution. It is the oldest university in Cuba and one of the first to be established in the Americas.Today the University of Havana has 15 faculties (colleges) at its Havana campus and distance learning centers throughout Cuba.
