my homage to "Before Sunrise" in my current mental state
Made by incendiarymind
For the past eight months or so, I've been totally smitten with this girl. Sadly, the smittenness was unrequited and she was never interested. I'm getting over it now but last Friday when I found out this was the case (well, actually I found out on Wednesday how unrequited the whole thing is) I was in the mood to be very wistful. There were about 45 minutes in this time where I really thought that there could be something there. Well, there was more than that in brief conversations where something would just click. But this 45 minutes was where we actually sat down and really talked and (at least I thought) connected. That took place at this location. I'm not sure if it was the exact planter but if it wasn't this one, it was the one on either side of it where we sat for that 45 minutes in May. The reason that I took this particular photo was that one of the many things we have in common is a love for the movie Before Sunrise. This is a tribute to the scene at the end where the director flashes to scenes where they were in the movie (but empty after they have both left Vienna). I personally think it's one of the best montages in cinematic history. This is my tribute to that. Except there's not going to be a Before Sunset. I almost always post photos in twos but I think this one is appropriate to post by itself. My horoscope says today: As a very peaceful day lies ahead, you should seize this opportunity to care for yourself. You have all the time in the world and you will be in the best disposition to analyze your life. Things will become clearer to you. Why not use this frame of mind to cast out differences and solve issues with people around you? So I think today is the day to finally post this. I'll post three less miserable photos to make up for it later.

Obsessee
Made by Flint Foto Factory
So, I had taken and posted my original edit of this self-portrait on the day I had been let go from my job of ten years (on November 9, 2010). Since then, someone had, every day, regularly clicked on the original edit of this image (by now, completely buried in my photostream) pretty much every day. I suspect my obsessor is someone from my old company, because they clearly seem to want me to know they are linking with my photostream through that image of me leaving my old job for the last time. I've taken better self-portraits (i.e. on my Flickr profile page), and this particular shot went back to November of last year - back through hundreds of photos / many pages from today in my photostream. That's reason enough for me to suspect my viewer was probably a one-time co-worker, or at least someone who doesn't see me anymore as a result of my layoff. Part of the risk involved in openly sharing one's artistry on the internet through an easily accessible site like Flickr is that by putting yourself out there, you may attract unwanted attention. For me, right now, the cowardice of whomever wants to repeatedly and systematically view that particular self-portrait (set to private as of today) without actually contacting me is enough of a barrier. Gee-Mo in Chicago Union Station
Made by wales23us
Way back when in 1981 it was a much different time. It was January 29, 1981 and due to the Iranian hostages being released, the State of Illinois called off school. A few of us railfans in Belvidere went into Chicago. I think we drove down to Geneva and rode a scoot into downtown and then walked over to Chicago Union Station. A stroll along the south concourse found an inbound train sitting on Track 20. From the 11 am that I have written on the slide mount, this must be train #314, the Prairie Marksman from East Peoria, IL. It was due into CUS at 9:55. We simply walked out onto the platform, set up the tripods and blasted away at the GP38 snuggled up close to the post. Behind is F40PH 305 and three Amfleet cars. The old canopys would be taken down later in 1981 when the air rights over the south platforms were sold and a new skyscraper was built overtop of them.

Chicago Union Station--south platforms

After the air rights above the south platforms at Chicago Union Station were sold the old canopys were removed before the new skyscraper was built over the tracks. For the Summer of 1981 the south platforms at CUS were out in the open. The date of this view is August 20, 1981 and I'm walking out to board the Blackhawk to ride back out to Rockford, IL. Two tracks over what I think was one of the Valpo Dummies is pulling into the station for loading. On the north end is P30CH 707.

Juniata Terminal's PRR EP22s were quite a draw at Union Station for the Chicago fans at National Train Day. The Philadelphia-based restored Pennsylvania Railroad trainset was positioned for its return home the next day. The PRR ceased to exist in 1968 but the Pennsy lives on thanks to Bennett Levin and his Juniata Terminal keeping the spirit alive. *Taken on Railroad Property with Permission*

And on the south end of the Valpo Dummy is SDP40F #630 on the two-car Amfleet consist. What I'm guessing is the first Valpo train is sitting over there on the left. Note the Phase III paint scheme on the AMTK 630. Very few of the SDP40Fs received this paint--probably only about 6-10 of them. August 20, 1981.

For some reason Amtrak brought the State House onto Track 2 this morning...Kinda...a little removing of details and changing of the lighting makes it look like that though! In reality, AMTK 406 sits without its prime mover at the head of the Anniversary train. It was on display October 1-2nd in Chicago.

This view emphasizes the waiting room. The actual boarding area is in the basement of the building to the right. This was originally the statin for the Pennsylvania and the Burlington among other tenants. Today it is The heart of Amtrak and also the location of some of Chicago's Metra services.

Amtrak's iconic locomotive, the EMD F40PH, has been decimated by the arrival en masse of the GE P40/42 fleet. Poor old 406 carries on the tradition of the F40 as it sits on display with the 40th Anniversary Train, its time on the point of Amtrak's fleet long since past.

A snowy start at Union Station

We left Chicago after a winter storm came through, the day we left was dominated by heavy lake effect snow showers. It took a lot longer than usual to make it to the station, but fortunately we didn't have to arrive 2 hours early like when we fly anywhere.

Since all of these are (or will soon be) abandoned because of autopay kiosks, what could you do with these types of structures? I like imagining super-efficiency studios apartments, stand alone pod hotels, or coffee stands.

Amtrak's 40th Anniversary Train was on display in Union Station, with Heritage I P42 156 also on display. It made for a neat line-up, but the harsh lighting made it difficult. I would have rather shot this on a cloudy day.
