Washington's green heart

Washington's green heart
Made by lollopins
Route 220 takes a 90 degree turn here in order to bridge this stream, and there's a little pull-over, almost a park, glowered over by this stone remnant. I wasn't inclined to venture too much further than I did, the spattering rain abetted as it was by the shivering, fat leaves making a mess of my camera as I slipped around on the damp rocks, beset by a cloud of mosquitoes super keen to tap any exposed skin. The streams are Damariscotta River, which bisects the town from north to south, and the outlet of Clark’s Ponds and of Washington Pond,—the last constituting Muscongus River. The surface of the town is uneven and in some parts rocky. Patricktown Mountain, in the north-western part, is the greatest elevation. The soil is productive, and the inhabitants are generally thrifty. Washington, the chief business centre, is about 35 miles easterly of Augusta, and 22 miles north-west of Rockland. It is on the stage-line from Augusta to Rockland and to Belfast. The post-offices are North and West Washington. The products of manufacture are boots and shoes, barrels and casks, cabinet-work, lumber (two mills), staves, harnesses, flour and meal, etc. -Varney, 1886

Union, ME Union Maine Agricultural Fair www.unionfair.org/ From Postcards from Small Town America Photo Essay **Christopher Moore (and the photographer) enjoy handmade baked goods and a glass of cold milk from a local church group at Maine's Union Fair. Christopher is enjoying blueberry cake made with wild Maine blueberries while the photographer is about to enjoy a slice of strawberry chiffon pie.** Photographer's Note: It was delicious, despite its somewhat unappetizing appearance.

World's Largest Moxie Bottle

World's Largest Moxie Bottle
Made by Rebel Squirrel
The Matthews Museum at the Union Fairgrounds in Union, ME, is home to an extensive collection of items relating to the oldest soft drink still in production, Moxie. This wooden bottle stands around 30 feet tall and was designed to be broken down and transported for advertising purposes. It was abandoned and later incorporated into a private summer residence for most of the 20th century. It has recently been restored and now lives in this brand new barn at the Matthews Museum along with all the other Moxie collection.

Meet Olyvia. Olyvia is the daughter of one of my customers. She is 18 years old and is taking the year off between high school and possibly going to college. She loves photography and is currently working at C4 designs as a production/designer. I expect she will do very well in whatever she chooses to do. This picture is #7 in my 100 strangers project. Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at www.100strangers.com

The feed pellets are sold in these cake cones, which the goats seem to like more than the feet itself.**

Taken in Washington, Maine. Ok, I couldn't decide which crop (thank you rhys400D for the suggestion) I liked most so I added them all. This is the detail of the water over the rock from and www.flickr.com/photos/61472368@N00/425325175/in/set-72157...

I fell in love with this Hawaiian shave ice machine and had to snap a pic - amusingly, the guy working at the stand told me that everyone with a fancy camera has been mesmerized by it for days now. Go figure. I'm sure their pics came out better than mine, but you get the drift.

Burkettville General Store

Burkettville General Store

Stopped here for soda and a snack. It's located in the boonies on Route 105. I believe this is actually in Appleton (the store's street address is Appleton). However, Flickr has other ideas, and insists that Burkettville is in Union. After a couple of tries, I gave up.

Jugglin' Jim

Jugglin' Jim
Made by Rebel Squirrel
Jugglin' Jim is a member of the Kent Family Magic Circus and a damn good juggler. I didn't get too many pictures of the Kent act. We were seated in the back and the stage was kind of low so I couldn't see the younger Kents very well. Maybe next time.

Shot from the grandstand, so I'm impressed I didn't muff this one up worse. I learned today that stage lighting that alters colors and intensity makes for an interesting experience trying to get shots in - especially when you're a bit far away like I was.

JCT 131

JCT 131

Near the junction of Routes 105 and 131 in Appleton. I don't think I've ever driven on a worse road than Route 105 today. Last weekend's rainstorm really did some damage. I may paint this one, too.

French Fried Ferris Wheel

French Fried Ferris Wheel
Made by Rebel Squirrel
Pretty sure this is the same Ferris Wheel that goes to Windsor Fair also. It's only fifteen miles up the road and runs the week after Union, so it would make sense to use the same equipment...

Equipment left on the high-wire platform between acts. I'd heard of the Flying Wallendas. Everybody's heard of the Flying Wallendas. I just didn't know they were still flying.

This is the filter that bore the brunt of the impact when my tripod and camera tipped over, landing lens first on a rock. Ouch! Taken just after the photo.

I have a bunch of shots of the pull, this was one of the more interesting ones. I'll try to post some more later.

I loved the color and pattern of the beams. This shot took me completely by surprise when it presented itself.
