Displaying your work is fun
Made by Justin Smith - Photography
Just a little break in the sunrises and sunsets for a moment. I have 3 pieces currently on display at the bookstore at the University of Massachusetts Boston. This is along with many other works of art (pen & ink, paintings, quilting, even poetry) by other people. The photos will be on display until next Monday afternoon. I have to say having photos up like this on display and greeting people who want to look at your art does wonders for self-confidence. I've gotten a ton of good words from people at the event (no sales yet, of course). Shot on the right probably looks familiar if you were viewing my stream at the end of the summer. It's from Acadia. On the other side is part of a shot I haven't uploaded yet (but will be soon). The third shot I have on display, which is not visible here, is an older shot from autumn last year. I had my coworker take this and I didn't really tell him how to use the camera so it's a little off, but whatever. Back to regular stuff in a few days. I'll try to catch up tonight.

John F. Kennedy ... !!
Made by BaLLYoOo
The John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum is the presidential library and museum of the 35th President of the United States, John F. Kennedy. It is located on Columbia Point in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts, USA, next to the Boston campus of the University of Massachusetts and the Massachusetts Archives. It was designed by the architect I. M. Pei. The building is the official repository for original papers and correspondence of the Kennedy Administration, as well as special bodies of published and unpublished materials, such as books and papers by and about Ernest Hemingway. The library and museum were dedicated in 1979 by President Jimmy Carter and members of the Kennedy family. It can be reached from nearby Interstate 93 or via shuttle bus from the JFK/UMass stop on the Boston subway's Red line. Ballys Studio

Light Portals

So this came out better than I expected, at least as far as processing goes. This is a composite of 3 DRIs layered over each other, with each DRI being composed of 3 exposures. I used 3 seemingly duplicate DRIs because I wanted to increase the number of ghost people in the image. I actually was hoping for a lot more than this, especially in the middle of the hall, but they just weren't around during my lunch-break (yes, I work nearby). Using DRI allowed me to get blue color through the window while at the same time getting some detail in the shadow areas. I've been wanting to take a picture here for a while. The mid-day sun comes in through all the tall windows along this wall and casts long rectangles of light everywhere. The building is the Campus Center at the University of Massachusetts Boston. I hate how much of a picture you lose if you end up having to rotate it to align the verticals.

Calf Pasture Pumping Station - Monochrome
Made by jores59
This Romanesque style structure was Boston's first sewage pumping station, created to eliminate unhealthy conditions in crowded neighborhoods. It is located at Columbia Point in Dorchester (a section of Boston MA), right next to the JFK Library and the Boston campus of the University of Massachusetts. Originally the marshlands of this area were used for grazing animals in the 1600s, giving the Station its name. It was designed by George A. Clough and built in 1883. At the time it was a state of the art centralized system where waste from the entire city was received with massive steam engines pumping it all to outer Boston harbor. It continued in use until 1968, replaced by a more modern facility on Deer Island. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Buildings in 1990, but is currently vacant and in a state of decay with no plans for use.

bug of the day
Made by urtica
So we're on our way back to the office from lunch, and on the way up the stairs (inside, mind you) is a waspy thing. Of course I had to stop and take a photo...and of course my coworker had to make fun of me. The wasp didn't seem to be doing very well, plus it was covered with all the dust and grime you tend to get on you when traversing the stairwells of UMass Boston :-). Following some discussion of whether I ought to take it outside or leave it, we decided to to just leave it be. This is a European paper wasp, Polistes dominula, an introduced species...I probably should have squashed it :-O. Blogged at the ISW.

bug of the day - bonus
Made by urtica
This tiny planthopper (about 2mm long) was collected by a Entomology student at my school - I was just lucky enough to be around when it was back in the lab. It looked so much like a fly to us before I saw the digicam version, yet it was hopping not flying. Must be a fly mimic with those antennae, no? Shot with a point-and-shoot through the lens of a dissecting scope. Definitely a Delphacid planthopper but I am not 100% sure on the genus (Muirodelphax).

BayState Games - Different Pitching Style
Made by Jon Bryant
Well today was the second day BayState Games. I don't even know which Baystate team this was. This girl is no , but she wasn't bad. She had a lot of support from everyone in the field (especially the short stop, who made some amazing plays). Just around the apartment and what do I hear a familiar ping...ping. Once I realized it was softball, I grabbed the point and shoot (small DSLR with 4 lenses) and shot some softball.

Turbine in twilight
Made by ewan.osullivan
Wind turbine seen across Savin Hill Cove at sunset. Tweaked the brightness a little to remove residual features in the black areas. One of the nice things about the Boston area is the attitude towards things like alternative energy - how many other places in America do you see turbines in cities?

UMass harbour walk
Made by ewan.osullivan
Looking south from the harbour walk alongside the UMass Boston campus - a particularly nice section of the path. Snow on the ground and the sun just starting to break through the clouds. The stupidly coloured thing in the background is a gasometer.

The Kennedy Library
Made by Harry Lipson III
JUST THINKING: Black and white symbolizing Civil Rights Era (so important to John and Bobby). The architecture is modern, impressive, and soars ( like JFK ). The somberness and starkness perhaps as a reflection on a national tragedy.

An old granite sign from the now-vacant Boston Water Works building in Dorchester, near the JFK Library. I took this shot for a night photography class last year and almost forgot about it until I recently rediscovered it.
