These young people are giving their time, energy and care to assist the removal of an introduced grass. Originally this foreign (South African I think) grass was used to stabilise the soil erosion caused principally by visitors tramping through the bush at the base of the rock. It became rampant and appears to be resistant to chemical treatment, fire and so on as the roots remain unaffected. There are so many instances of pestilent flora and fauna in Oz. Our land has developed a subtle, knife-edge environmental balance over the millions of years since its separation from Gondwanaland and has been battered by the introduction of foreign species since European discovery. So often these newcomers grow to plague proportions, destroying native species in the process. Rabbits, Cane Toads, Blackberries, Water Hyacinth, foxes, waterbuffalo, pigs, feral cats, rats... the list goes on

Every morning while I was in Central Australia, I got up at 5:30am to enjoy the spectacular early morning light as it hit Uluru at sunrise. From this vantage point, you can also see Kata Tjuta off in the distance, 25km away (on the right-side horizon line). Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, Australia

The base circumference of Uluru is about 9km -- I walked solo around the rock in the early morning, stopping to photograph the long shadows and listen to the morning bird song. Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, Australia, 2006

We were totally fascinated by Uluru. We had no intention of climbing it in the first place but when we discovered that the Aboriginal guardians of Uluru prefer visitors not to attempt a climb we felt more tuned-in to the spirit of the place.

This is what we had driven 20,000 kilometers to experience - a big red rock in the middle of a continent!
