First impressions of Trabzon are dismal. You arrive slap bang in the middle of the red light district by the port, all peroxide blonde wigs, lurid lycra, and lewd offers purred from dark doorways. Many travellers just hop on the next bus out, but I carried on up the hill to discover a quirky friendly city with hidden bazars and a well-preserved old town...and hardly a tourist in sight.

On my first visit, this was a picturesque residential quarter, but it seems to have been razed. I have no idea why, but think it might have something to do with the new vile ugly bridge I stood on to take this photo.
