Ypsilanti State Hospital - by now renamed Ypsilanti Regional Psychiatric Hospital - was one of the first to go, closed in 1991. Of the state's original 28 mental hospitals, only three for adults and one for children remain in operation today. A small portion at the back of Ypsilanti State Hospital, ringed with barbed wire, remained in use as the Center for Forensic Psychiatry, where the state sent individuals who committed its most twisted crimes for psychiatric evaluation. With the opening of a new building for the Center for Forensic Psychiatry just north of the old hospital last year, however, the complex has been completely abandoned. Ypsi State was a nearby psychiatric hospital. It was closed down for good in 1991, but it's deteriorated quite a bit since the 1970s, when it held more than 1000 patients and 4000 employees. This is its water tower. Might as well see it bigger. This is from the first roll of slides I've ever taken, on my Olympus XA. It was Kodak Elite Chrome 100. The XA loves this film! I'm impressed too with the job my Epson 3170 is doing scanning the 35mm.

Want a drink? Not that it's particularly relevant here, but I love nicknames. They're so ridiculous - and old people use them so earnestly. How can someone call another person a name like rusty or chief with a straight face? For the last few years I've been calling people by these nicknames whenever possible. I use Rusty, Chief, Buster, Sport. Can you think of any more I can toss into the mix?

Abandoned state psychiatric hospital by Milan, Michigan. I was there for about 5 minutes before I got told to leave. The guy that kicked me out mentioned that he really loved taking pictures of old buildings, too, and we spent some time talking about detroit's abandoned buildings.

This is one of the main buildings at the psych hospital. This long hallway is entirely contained within iron bars. Creepy. Also, since this walkway dead-ends into the side of the hall, I assume the hall was constructed after the building behind it?

Unfortunately, I was taking a few pictures through broken windows, and then I came back out and forgot to knock the ISO setting down from 800. The lighting was bad as it was, and that juts made it worse.
