Stranger 005/100
Made by KathleenYago
Jerome is #005 in my 100 strangers project. Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at the . I had finished taking my Stranger #4 photo, along the water near Crissy Field and the Golden Gate Bridge. My sister, brother-in-law and I walked out on this pier where there were tourists, people fishing and a number of seagulls. After admiring a pelican that flew in low above us and parked itself on one end of the dock, I decided to approach Jerome. Jerome and his father were fishing off the pier. They had a number of fishing poles set up. I asked them what they were fishing for and he said that mostly they were crabbing. They had already caught a few crabs which were huge! While we were chatting about crabbing (being from the Chesapeake Bay area originally, we had crabs of a different kind there) a seal swam around us, checking out the crab traps. Jerome's father was original from Jersey City and he had long braided dreadlocks. Jerome's mother was from Baton Rouge and together they decided to raise their children in the East Bay, specifically, they were from Hayward. This was their second fishing/crabbing trip to this area. Jerome and his father were both very friendly and a bit on the quiet side. They seemed to be enjoying the time together and the amazing weather. I liked their quiet demeanor, something about reminded me of wisdom. I did take more time with the photo, even using the flash to help with the harsh shadows in the bright sun (don't think it helped too much). The more of these photos I take the more I realize that I am leaning towards the shots that include more of the surroundings/context of the person and encounter. The closeups are different and seem to leave more to the imagination. I think I like part of the story in there with the surroundings. Maybe if I really get to know another stranger well, the closeup will tell the more intimate story and it will feel more appropriate. We shall see.

City Dweller

This group of shots was taken at Chrissy Field near Fort Point in San Francisco CA the next day after a huge Christmas Party I attended. I was a little groggy but after a good nights sleep in a free room, I drove to the water and pulled out my camera and some filters to record the bridge. It was not raining but close, and I had to cut it short because it did start to rain at the end. I had to warm up the cold and overcast shot with a filter or two so these are not intended to be accurate. The seagull was gracious enough to stand still while I snapped a couple of shots. The fog lifted for a moment, allowing me to see the top of the tower as I took that shot. Alcatraz and Angel Island provided some nice backgrounds as well. Spooky fluke

I wanted to get some nice sunrise-over-the-Golden-Gate shots, so I woke up before 0400 and bussed & walked down to the beach. Although it had been hot and sunny all week, Murphy's Law was in full effect on this clasically-cloudy and foggy San Francisco Saturday morning. The bridge was shrouded in fog from the deck upwards and, while it did gradually lift, there were no sunrise shots to be had. I'd been switching back and forth between the 17-55 and 70-300mm lenses all morning. This shot was one of a burst that I took with the 17-55. Immediately after I took this particular frame, the camera froze and it sounded like the mirror was locked up. I removed the lens to take a look; the mirror was fine, but the rubber ring seal around the rear element had come slightly dislodged -- enough, I guess, to interrupt the contacts between the lens and body. I re-seated the seal, rebooted the camera and all was well. This image is the result of that mechanical fluke. None of the other shots in the burst look similar. I rather like it.

Free to be...

Alcatraz Island as seen thru the bollards on the fishing pier at Crissy Field. The enigma of Alcatraz Island is that it is tantalizingly close to San Francisco. It was said that the prisoners could sometimes hear the sounds of traffic and laughter wafting 1.4 miles over the Bay. Of course, now you are completely free to visit there whenever you want - just make a reservation (weeks in advance) and pay the ~$35 ticket price.

At that time of night it was pitch dark in the park, dead quiet and nothing on the bridge. It was eerily beautiful. Also, the Big Dipper is visible roughly at the center of the image above the bridge.

On San Francisco Bay. The Gas Light is is a replica of 19th century scow schooners like the Alma.

Planning the attack
Made by rcrowley
Some fishermen were getting rid of their bait. The seagulls, needless to say, wanted theirs and had quite a time. Also needless to say, I did not capture the attack in any way.

This was the only thing we caught all day, and we had to throw it back. You can't keep dungeness crab caught inside the San Francisco Bay. Bummer. Fort Point pier, 7/5/10

I neglected to adjust the homemade lens hood, and so there's a whole lot of vignetting. That, and the image was auto-leveled, hence the weird colors.

SF Pelican

Pretending it's one of the Blue Angels. I don't think pelicans can make a sound loud enough to fool anyone.
